If you rent a car, or can get a few persons together to hire a taxi, you can also use Antigua as a base for most of the day trips from Guatemala City. You'll probably find Antigua a more pleasant place in which to stay. If you're traveling by bus, you can visit Chichicastenango or Iximché and return to Antigua in the evening.
San Felipe de Jesus, a suburb of Antigua, is the
site of a white Gothic church containing a famous
image of Christ. On the
first Friday of Lent, the image is the goal of pilgrims who seek cures
of their illnesses. There's also a factory where silver articles
are made, located about two blocks from the central park. Visitors
are welcome to watch the crafstmen at work. Children outside will
try to hustle themselves as guides, but there's no need for them since
the town is very small.
Buses operate to San Felipe about every half hour from the Antigua terminal. You must remember that the last return bus is at 6 pm, if you miss the bus be prepared to walk at least for 35 - 40 minutes, depending on how much you like walking. If you happen to miss the last bus, follow 6 Avenida northward out of the town.
