DENTISTS FOR THE WORLD

WOMEN FOR THE WORLD

Dentists For The World is an association of concerned dentists acting in the public interest. We try to answer the question as concerned world citizens, "what can we do for the world?" Our answer has been we can volunteer to serve,by practicing dentistry among needy populations in countries where oral health care is not developed, raise funds for undeveloped communities, initiate social development projects, teach families early preventive care, and join with social and physical science professionals to investigate barriers to achieveing these goals.

Dentists For The World is mainly organized to develop a preventive out-reach program in areas that are lacking either dental education, treatment, or both.We desire to set-up in these areas the training and utilization of lay community dental health workers who will go directly into families teaching them the very basics of home care. Our members and volunteers will directly be involved in the training of these para-professionals. Dentists For The World will educate for pure water world wide and universal fluoridation.

Dentists For The World is a not-for-profit organization with ties to the United Nations and part of a third world research program conducted by the World Health Organization and the Fuji Co.volunteers are needed through-out the year.At the moment we are involved in programs in Mexico, Vietnam, Caribbean, India, Israel, and Indian reservations. We are constantly opening programs globally. We hope that you will join us and find a unique and fulfilling experience.

MEXICO
Dentists For The World maintain a permanent project in GTZ Zamora. This is a small town of 13,000 in the State of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. It is a 3 hour drive from the city of Veracruz. The average wage in this area is $10.50 a day and the people, espiecially the children, cannot afford dentistry. We are their only source of dental care and education. We have a program of both treatment and education. We train local women to be dental educators and go into homes teaching proper nutrition, tooth brushing, and general hygiene. We also advocate for clean and fluoridated water. Since there are no local municipal dental clinics our volunteers use the World Health Organization protocols for third world countries. In that way were able to bring dentistry to a great number of children. We accept dental, medical, lay personnel. There is a lot of work to be done here on all levels. Volunteers work 20 hours a week and we require a minimum of one week stay. A few times a year we go down in a large group while the rest of the time volunteers go themselves.

ISRAEL
We send volunteers on a regular basis to a volunteer clinic in Jerusalem, Israel where poor Jewish and Arab children are treated. The clinic is extremly well equipped with four chairs, assistants, and hygienists. It is supported by the municipality and donations. There is free housing. Volunteers work 20 hours a week and must do a minimum of one week.
INDIAN RESERVATIONS

For those who wish to stay closer to home we have the capability of placing you on a Hopi Indian Resrvation in Arizona. Minimum stint is 2 weeks to one month. Free housing is available. Working conditions are good and it is an 8 hour day.

INDIA - Bangalore
Dentists For The World has instituted an exchange program with the dental school in Bangalore, India. We are hoping to send our first group there by the end of March,1999 where they will lecture and perform community work in an area that needs our expertise desperately. For those who wish, the university at Bangalore will provide free housing at a youth hostel, otherwise, there a a number of moderate and up-scale hotels available.

The university has two mobile dental units which we would be able to use. They have already treated over 25,000 patients with these units. This will be a very exciting trip for all those who want to go and a once in a life time experience.

Bangalore is a major city and situated in the southern pennisula of India. The city has many major U.S. corporations and is considered the "Silicon Valley" of India.
