HOME  TIMOR COVER     INTRODUCTION   FIELD REPORT    PHOTO ESSAY

My first night gave way to fitfull spells of something close to sleep in the 'Hotel Turismo', a small, dark hotel built fully in the spirit of the Portugese (and starkly remiscent of the architecture of many buildings in Macau).  The next morning my colleague, Dr. A.Z.M. Obaidullah Khan, and I departed for the Eastern reaches of Timor; Los Palos.  We rented a vehicle and driver who professionally but still with white-knuckle thrills negotiated the tortuous seaside cliffs of the North.  The scenery was spectacular and quite green.

'What is the problem here?  Why are there no animals grazing?  Why no corn or cassava or other food crops planted?'  were the questions going through my mind.
