'Why no weeds?' I am wondering. 'Why no animals?'
A closer look at the soil reveals it to be physically identical to the soil producing the wonderful stand of corn across the street. Father Jose explains that this land is not farmed because of lack of tractors. The soil is too heavy to be turned by hand. Were the land shown to us with all the weeds, as well as this land be fully farmed, a very large section of the population would have just about enough food on their plates everyday, Fr. Jose estimates.
It is another huge area of land that could be under agriculture but isn't. It is becoming clear the food problem here is not immediately linked to any natural causes such as drought. It is a lack of agricultural activity. It is a political problem.
'But if the land is too heavy to turn by hand and there are no tractors
why not use buffalo?' I still do not have my answer.
