Vladimir Vetchy was born on May 8,
1946 in Toebíe, Moravia. In 1972 he graduated from the Faculty of Sciences, Jan
Evangelista Purkyne University (today the Masaryk University) in Brno, and acquired his
RNDr. degree there in 1979. In 1986 he attained a PhD degree after defending successfully
his dissertation thesis. Upon graduation, Mr.Vetchy took up a career as lecturer in the
Department of Mathematics of the Brno Military Academy and stayed on there until his
appointment as the Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic on July 22, 1998. Mr.Vetchy has been a member of the CSSD Social Democratic Party since 1991, and Chairman of its Defence Committee since 1996. Mr.Vetchy is married and has two children. His wife, Alena, is a grammar school teacher in Brno. Their son, David (b.1972), graduated from the Faculty of Sciences, Masaryk University, Brno, with organic chemistry as his major subject, and is currently a fourth-year student of the Brno Pharmaceutical Faculty. The Vetchys' daughter, Helena (b.1975), is in her fifth year of training at the Masaryk University's Medical School. |
