Welcome to the Detroit Area

Detroit and Environs

Here are some pictures I have recently taken of Detroit from Windsor. Detroit is a city on the comeback. Even though I live here I included these to showcase the city. It isn't a bad place as so many movies and news reports show. It is a reputation we do not deserve. The heart of the city was nearly abandoned because of these false fears. Now, however, people are coming back. Offices are filling up. A new Tiger Stadium is going up. Soon a new Lion Stadium will go up along with three casinos. Also, General Motors has bought the Renaissance Center to make their new headquarters. They intend to open the waterfront and add new apartments along the river. Detroit is coming back. It may be slow and overdue but it is coming back.

Here is downtown Detroit from the Doubletree Hotel to Cobo Hall. Included inbetween is City Hall, One Detroit Center, ANR Building, the beautiful red Guardian Building, the Penobscott Building, 150 W. Jefferson Building (Madden Building), the Ponchatrain Hotel and the Comerica Building.

Here's a closer view of the centre of downtown. One Detroit Center is the tallest building in the picture. It's the second tallest in Detroit at 620 feet. Also, the third tallest building, the Penobscott Building (557 ft.), is distinguished by its neon-lit spire. In front of it is the 150 W. Jefferson Building (472 ft). In the middle back is the Guardian Building (485 ft). It is one of the most beautiful skyscrapers I have ever seen. I'll have more pictures of it later. In front of it is the American National Resources Building (ANR). It is 420 feet tall.

Downtown Detroit flanked by the Renaissance Center (RenCen). It consists of four towers of 479 feet in height, the Westin Hotel Tower of 743 feet in height(tallest building in Michigan) and two shorter towers in back. It was originally designed to have eight of the shorter towers and riversided apartments but economics ruled those out. It was designed to revitalize downtown but failed. It was recently bought by G.M. to make it their headquarters. They plan to complete the residential portion of the design and open the water front. In the end it may play a major role, along with the casinos and stadiums, in revitalizing downtown.

A closer shot of the RenCen.

This view is from Cobo Hall to the upscale Riverside Apartments. The former Mayor Colman Young lived here before he died. Also, I think Rosa Parks lives here now. I think she moved here after she was mugged in front of her old house on Rosa Parks Blvd.

This shot shows what is inbetween the Riverside Apartments and the Ambassador Bridge. The Ambassador Bridge is the only bridge, at present, to cross the Detroit River. It has a main span of 1850 feet. When it was completed in 1929 it was the longest bridge in the world. A year later, however the George Washington Bridge in New York eclipsed the Ambassador. It still kept the title of longest international bridge in the world, a title I think it still holds.

This is the hotel of the new Windsor Casino in Windsor, Ontario. It is very close to completion.
