This is our first monthly editorial and I thank you for visiting this website. As explained in "What is BOL?",this website is anything about Bachok-its history, people, culture, economy etc.
May be I am not wrong to say that my district is famous for two things-Pantai Irama,a holiday beach for the locals and the tobacco growing area.
As told to me by my elders, the name Pantai Irama was given by Tan Sri Muhammad Yaakub, the former Menteri Besar of Kelantan when he was the District Officer of Bachok at that time.It was a beautiful beach then, however the conditions now is very bad due to neglect and pollution.A lot need to be done-it was like a beautiful kampung girl being left to a poor old grandma.
As a tobacco growing area,it earns RM50m a year!
It is great to provide cash for local farmers, but
there is too much dependence on this crop.Any occasional bad weather or
drop in price will greatly affect the farmers livelihood.Other alternative
forms of crops or industries are needed to ensure and maintain the status
quo.On top of that, the younger generation are not just happy to be fishermen
and tobacco farmers as their elders. They want better and new ways of earning
a living.Anybody have an answer to this?
There is news that Pantai Senok may be selected to be the landing area for the gas project. If this project materialise,Bachok is sure to change for the better in the next five years. What if there is no gas project? Will Bachok remain as it was for the next 20 years?A lot of if's and questions that need to answered.
Bachok is not short of good potential physical assets and hardworking people-not to mention quite a number of highly qualified and experienced professionals and personalities. But what has gone wrong?
So many things have gone wrong. How do we get things done right the next time. Please give your suggestions.
All comments/suggestions are welcome.
