ME, MYSELF, AND I

Hey and hello!! I'm Gretchen Krantz from Toledo, Ohio and have just recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Industry and Coaching from Ohio University in Athens (NOT Ohio State in Columbus for all you confused individuals who may have thought that OU was OSU). I came in majoring in Marine Biology, but my aspirations changed - as do almost everyone's - and I very much enjoyed my fields and the classes they entailed (except for the accounting class I was forced to take *blah* :Þ).

"Coaching of what?" you may wonder. Well, I played high school volleyball, and it's high school girls' varsity volleyball that I would like to someday coach. From the end of March until mid-May, I was the assistant coach of the Athens Volleyball Program's 16's Black ("#1" team of the 16's) Club Team under Mike Webster, who was the grad assistant to the OU women and is now the 2nd assistant at Central Florida University. I had a really great time, but most importantly, it made me realize that I really do want to coach that age group. We had 5 weekends in a row with a tournament, which kind of wore us out I think, but we won our very first tournament, came in 2nd in 2 others, and actually competed very closely in the Silver division at regionals in Columbus. It was a great experience, and I'm getting my second opportunity right now with the East YMCA here in Toledo. I dropped down a few levels by taking on U13's, and the skill level is a LOT different from last year's 16's, but I think we should have a pretty good season. We're having a good time so far, and that's the most important thing :)

As for my Sport Industry major, I worked with the Toledo Storm hockey organization of the ECHL Christmas break of 1998, and everyone thinks I'm nuts for having my dreams so high, but I would like to someday own my own ice rink/sports complex. I'm really interested in the management side of sports, and I have Dave Miller to thank for that. I was part of the event management staff for the past 2 seasons with Ohio Volleyball, and that position almost got me an internship with USA Volleyball with the Junior Olympics :( I was upset, but it just goes to show that God has plans for everyone, and as much as I wanted it, something bigger and better is supposed to come along... eventually haha

Speaking of bigger and better things in store for me, I am an Event Supervisor with Oregon City Recreation. Oregon is a city about 2 minutes from my house, so not too much trouble getting to work! And the position will be a lot like the one I had with OU's Varsity Volleyball team, so the adjustment should be relatively easy :) I'm also back at the East YMCA as a child care counselor... which has nothing to do with my majors or what I really want to do in life, but it's giving me extra money to pay off what bills I have (not to mention bolstering my resume), so *shrug* Poor recent college grad has to do what she can! haha
As you may have gathered from the job position I'm looking for, one of my great loves in life is ice hockey. When I tell people I play, the first question they ask is: "Oh, field hockey??" Then, when I say, "No, ice hockey," they ask, "With other girls?" The answer is kinda. My best friend (Jenn) and I played in a morning league called the Ohio University Hockey Group. I talk more about the OUHG on my hockey page. In addition to hockey, I love volleyball and football. Baseball is once again one of my favorite sports. I've liked it for a long while, but I think OU's team kinda helped get back into it like I used to be. As a true Braves fan, though, I was a fan through their rotten years and have never lost interest in them! While I know a good deal about a LOT of sports, I don't know HALF as much as my good friend Dave does (he's a manager for OU's team) about baseball!! I'm also learning a lot more than I ever knew - or ever thought I wanted to know - about basketball. Right now, I'm supervising basketball and learning that it's not so bad... but I still don't like the NBA. So, check out baseball and basketball!!

As for my other passions, I've played violin for 12 years now (since 5th grade!!) and hope to play in an orchestra again eventually. I didn't get a chance to play at OU, but I also love to sing and was in All City Choir in high school and Women's Chorale at OU for 2 quarters. I thought about minoring in music, but I wanted to graduate on time... which I did despite changing major so late!!! Check out my music page while you're at it! :)

How could I have forgotten?? *slap forehead* I LOVE country music, and another thing I really like to do is line dancing. It's really fun :) Jenn and I know about 40 dances, but now that I've graduated, we only get to go dancing together once in a blue moon :( We took a class down at school spring quarter of 1997 and learned a lot, but most of what we know, we learned through watching at a club and just trying it. Fortunately for us, we catch on quick, so we avoid looking like total idiots out on the dance floor!! *GRIN* haha
