THINNING THE HERD
1963                                                  2003
I know, this is probably not where you were expecting to go... but I needed to make an announcement.
It came to my attention last night, that Wesley Willis has passed away!
Wesley was an incredible soul, and a great musician, writer, artist.
Wes was 40 years old, and died from complications resulting from the leukemia he had,
we hope he didn't suffer.

Anyone from the Chicago area is probably very familiar with Wesley, as he spent all of his time on the streets there... He was what most would call 'a Bum'
Schizophrenic, 6'5 and 300 pounds... Wesley was
hard to miss
but he was as gentle as they come... and brilliant
when he was lucid.

He was discovered a few years ago, and definitely
made a mark on music.
I personally had the opportunity to see
the 'Wesley Willis Fiasco' twice... once in Boston
and once again in Chicago where he was revered.
The shows were incredible!
I never got the chance to meet Wes in person,
but always wanted to.

Wes was also somewhat of an artist,
constantly sketching marker drawing of
his Chicago.
Work of his has been featured in galleries
across the country.

Many cynics have argues that Wes' fame stems
from his imbalance, I do not agree.
I believe that it may have opened a door for him,
but Wesley was a talented shining soul, and everyone would have noticed sooner
or later anyway. It gave him an outlook on life that we all need. Innocent, naive...
and tortured as well. There is definitely something missing in society that Wesley
managed to capture. We needed that, and we are going
to miss it terribly.

Some called Wesley a Savant, I guess he was in a way...
He was suffering from severe mental problems, but he was
as gifted as man can be...
I called him beautiful...
I sing his praises now and always.

Wesley died on Aug 21st
of complications due to Chronic Mayelogenic Leukemia
He is survived by his Parents, Walter and Annie Ellington,
2 Sisters and 5 Brothers.

RIP my brother... May there be a God, and may he shine upon you
