Hey there Nick, I like your page. I visited the UK in the Christmas season of 1995 and remember some of the games mentioned on your page. I also enjoy the Fort Boyard reviews. I currently watch the Quebec version over here in Canada. Keep up the good ork!

Oh, I agree that the French version is superior, no doubting that, but the British version isn't bad really. And you don't even have to go to France to see the French version, if you've got cable you can find episodes on TV5 (even though they've just finished showing the great '98 series. Sorry.) Bye! Nick

The French version of Fort Boyard is far superior than ours - for one thing it has no Melinda Messenger, or Leslie Grantham, or that ridiculous professor. It doesn't matter that you can't understand a word they're saying - it is top class telly, well wort a trip to France just to see it. I do prefer the Crystal Maze though.

Thanx Nick for giving me your website address. Cool site, by the way. I only recently saw the French version of FB, and I actually prefer the British one. (Leslie Grantham as the deliciously evil Boyard might have something to do with that...) His best li e so far? When one of the contestants couldn't get a key in the lock, he said: "Come on, I'm not going to show you how to put it in, I'm not Dr. Ruth!" Classic, or what?

Mick, my dearest form member, congratulations on a most comendable web site. But I believe it needs more on the FWWMBPUHCD'l, and perhaps a bit on you being King of the SHow. Also, where is the promised MFI Tuesday back catalogue?

Nick Gates - 10/22/98 09:38:25

Comments:
Hmm. No, it isn't as good as the French version but that's not to say that it is bad by any means - indeed it did some bits brilliantly yet stylistically it lacks most of the little things that make the French version better as a programme.

Still, good stuff however! And Leslie Grantham DID have some excellant lines, even if he was called 'Boyard' (which was pretty cringeworthy).

Nick Well, what did you reckon.... I thought it was nowhere as good as the french version...but Leslie Grantham.....an evil slant on Patrice? Excellent.....when he asked the guy if he got the clue...the guy said no...and he called him THICKO!!! I'm still rewinding and watching over and ove ! What did you think? Mark

Nick Gates - 10/08/98 15:27:02

Comments:
Yes, it turns out my news was unfounded. Ironically perhaps, it was the Channel 5 website that misled me but thankfully it's not true. Phew!

As it turns out, Leslie Grantham is playing an 'evil' Maitre d' Fort (as opposed to Patrice Laffont's quite affiable one - but this is based on somebody with very little knowledge of French!) and the team will only have to collect four instead of seven ke s. Expect the Time Chasers bit to be scrapped as well.

I'm told that the American pilot of the show, Capture Fort Boyard put two teams against each other and was rubbish. That's why I was worried.

I can sleep easy tonight... Thanks! Nick

Nick How did you find out that the Brit version would have two teams battling against each other? I have seen more or less all of the previews and do not get that there will be two teams...am I missing something? And don't get so disheartened about it if there are two teams...How can they have two teams with Leslie doing Patrice's job and Melinda doing Cendrine's? There is no way they can each take a team on each to guide them round the fort........ I reckon you are getting worked up for nothing...There's only one way we'll find out, and that's to watch the making of on Friday 9th October 8:20pm Channel 5 to find out! Mark

Nick Gates - 10/03/98 12:32:37

Comments:
OH NO! THEY'VE ONLY GONE AND Y RUINED IT! Channel 5 preview announces that TWO teams battle it out on the fort in the ultimate test of strategy and stamina. This sounds an awful lot like Capture Fort Boyard, the American pilot made eight years ago, and I'm told that that is rubbish. On the plus side, there is a 'making of Fort Boyard' programme this week on the 9th.

Or maybe there might be another way... not yet though.

Incidentally, Fort Boyard on Channel 5 starts on Friday the 16th of October. It promises to use the more physical that are used. A second series is highly likely so who knows, some friends and I might be on the telly before the end of the millenium! br>

Well that's it then. It apears that I've been completely locked out of the Geocities system thanks to the red tape at the local library. Basically, this is the end (for the moment) as I can't add any more stuff to the page, although the Forum can still be added to. I hope you've all enjoyed reading the page as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

This is not to say that it won't return (parents are considering getting connected, but not for a while yet) but for now there can be no more.

Bon Soir!

I just have to add something. You said, that the german version has more in common with your maze. I don't know this game, but the german version of FB was excactly the same with the english version till 1990. They had to collect the keys, entered the treasure-room and then opened one box of gole with one key. The more keys they had, the more boxes they could open. And: They had to stay in the treasure-room the whole time. They could not take the gold off and then come back. In 1991 the situation c anged, because they had to guess the final word to make the boyards fall down. But before 91 it was exactly the same: So I think that french was first!

This is all getting very interesting! A ted history from what I know and have read. The German version started in 1988 (obviously). From what I've read on the Expand 'Buy These Shows They Are Good' site, they've been working on the show since 1990 (which is where I got my date from). I've also read that the Fort was bought in 1988 after Jaques Antoine saw the Fort which was used in a film. I have also read about the old Boyard collecting game (although didn't know quite how it worked) because of an old newspaper article on a CD-ROM (which I found when I was bored, incidentally and I'll p int it up if and when I get connected at home).

Crystal Maze was based on the ideas behind Fort Boyard (Jaques Antoine is listed as inventing some of the games in the first series - but it's Jean-Paul Mittercy who invents most of the games from season to season on FB) and the idea was that people played games for s, the more s s won, the more time they had to collect tokens at the end of the game and if they collected enough they would win good prizes. The games are often more mentally challenging than FBs and you do spen half your time shouting at the contestants on screen when you know what to do and they don't!

It does have to be said however, if the French version did start before the German, 1986 would be a good year. There were big changes in 1995 and if it did start in 86 then it would have been the 10th series and you know what happens when TV producers get to round numbers...

This is by no means the ultimate history of Fort Boyard and there are probably gaps somewhere but if anybody is reading this and knows something write in! Bye! Nick

Hi Nick, I really was sursprised finding a link to my page on your homepage. Thanx. I'm not sure, if the german version of Fort Boyard was really produced two years before the french version started. In 1988 the show was introduced on tv and they said: "F rt Boyard is popular in France for years". So I think that the french production started quite a few years before (in 86 or so). When I recognized the repetitions of Fort Boyard on the polish tv-station ATV last year, they just showed the versions from 19 0, but before the show there was a text "Fort Boyard (47)" So there must have been lots of episodes before!!! O.K. Continue working on your site. It's excellent! Greetings Andy.

Hi Nick, I am a fan of fort boyard, too. Perhaps you read about my GERMAN Fort Boyard page at Richard's Fort Boyard Page. I just wanted to tell you, that I wrote a mail to tv5-europe and axsked when they show the 1998 series of fort boyard. **** I have no other possibility for watching the show. If you want to take a look on my homepage (it's about fort boyard from 88(german) and 90-97(french) then take a look at http://surf.to/fort.boyard !! Next week, when I finished the german version, I start to translate it into english!!! Please continue writing about 1998 series if you can see it. Greetings from germany, Andy(21) mail: atj@gmx.de web: surf.to/fort.boyard

Hello! I have taken a look at your German Fort Boyard page and it is EXTREMELY interesting! I never would have guessed that the German version came two years before the French and if anything, our old show 'The Maze' seems to have more in commo with the German version than with the French one. I'll keep looking at your homepage! Thanks - Nick

Hi Nick -- as promised, a message! Regarding the thing I mentioned from the L&H Web site, here's Rich's exact quote... "The King of the show entries are the weakest so far, but the winner - a man with curly hair who says pens bounce off his head when you throw them at him (they do too) is funny." Rich's excellent tour diaries can of course be found at http://www.leeandherring.com. Good thing about L&H in the Guide section of today's Guardian, BTW; apparently there's a chance that Rich's plays are going to appear on (or off-)Broadway... Best DaveJ.

Hi! Nice to meet you again. I've actually put a link to the Lee and Herring page on the bottom of my page. Thanks for the info! - Nick.

Wow, A british Fort Boyard...nick, isn't this what we have been waiting for??? I reckon that Richard O'Brien should step back into his adventure Game Show shoes....wouldn't that be "Genial"!!
If Richard O Brien DID do it, it would be excellent. However, people would merely think that it was Maze II as opposed to Maze 0 - A bad thing. Also bear in mind that this is Channel 5 were talking about but hopefully if Tilt/Expand ar still doing it then it will still be great even if condensed into an hour (which is only 50 minutes really!) - Nick
