The Other Half

Dale Winton - Is he or isn't he?

Well then, is he or isn't he? He tries desperately to keep it secret so as to keep people guessing. The question? Whether he is going to do another series of Supermarket Sweep or not.

Immature jokes aside, The Other Half is a gameshow where people try to guess who is married to whom. It's on at 6:50 on BBC1 on Saturdays. The game is split into two. Couples play for a place in the semi-final and then the final where they can win big prizes. The first bit involves bringing on the married person (the male in this case). There is a bit of chat and then the four women are brought on, each one saying how they met him. After this, the guessers give they're initial response to this by saying who they think might be the right one and why they think that. This doesn't count, only the one at the end does.

Next we see a tour of they're house giving by Dale ina very Through the Keyhole style (in fact if Loyd Grossman ever gave up, he wouldn't make a bad substitute!). Again the guessers are asked for their opinions.

Then the guessers can ask three questions of the women (3 questions in total rather than 3 to each woman). Of course, only one of them is telling the truth, the other three are lying. Again, opinions are asked.

Next, the man tells of an embarrasing story of his wife. Then, the women get to tell an embarrasing story of him although of course only one person is telling the truth, the rest are all made up.

Now the interesting and funny bit. The four women then kiss the man (who is married to only one of them, remember). This is where investing body language and reactions come into play. The man is kissing three strangers as well as the wife and that's what makes it amusing!

After all that, the guessers have one guess as to who the wife is. If they are correct, they go through to the semi-final but if they are wrong than the proper married couple go through instead. I don't remember what the commiseration prize is but I think there was one.

The whole thing is then repeated but with a completely different set of guessers and choices, only if it was a man in the chair before this time it would be a woman and four men. Exactly the same thing is repeated.

The two couples that have won their way through to the semi-final play a first on the buzzer game where they have to guess the celebrity couple. However, the person who buzzes ISN'T the person who answers, that is their other half (the person whom they are married to). Very clever but not original as that system was used in a programme called Second Guess on The Family Channel (now Challenge TV). Like I said, clever.

The couple who win through to the final then have to match up one more couple. Cleverly, this took place with one of the rejected men in the second half and three of the rejected women from the first half. The women are each asked a question. Then it's make your mind up time! They place bets on the three women. One is a trip to Antigua (woooh!), one is £1000 (the second prize) but the other is a trip around the M25 (ha, ha, hyperventilite). They place these three bets on the women. We are then told who the correct one is and the guessers win the prize they bet on it.

Dale Winton carries the show along very well it has to be said and his camp style does suit the show. It is a show you don't have to think about too much and doesn't put a strain on the brain. You can also play along at home which is always a good thing. The show has a very happy and fun feel about it and it is very funny in places. This said, the word 'tacky' may come to mind. Forget that, however and ypu'll find an enjoyable Gameshow that appears to have nicked bits from other gameshows. Watch out Cilla, your day's may be numbered!

Uppers: Amusing. Good playalongathome factor. Downers: Might have limited appeal.

VERDICT: 6/10 - A fun show that doesn't take itself too seriously. No charge.

Hmm...
