Supermarket Sweep

Are you ready to go shopping?

Wow. The only supermarket that gives you money (they neglect to mention people who work in a supermarket for a living but I digress...)

It's a show that is hosted by the rather camp host Dale Winton (see The Other Half, and no, he refuses to mention which sex his other half is but I suppose trying to guess is half the fun). The idea of the game is to answer questions in order to win time to go 'wild in the aisles' in the supermarket and possibly, the best team winning £2000.

Three teams of two are brought on and immediately the first round starts. Each team is given a minute each (DING!) and then a 'What am I?' question is asked. The first team to buzz in with the correct answer gets 10 seconds added to their time (DING!) and the chance to run the mini-sweep. They have 30 seconds to find the item that was being asked about and bring it back to the front. If they did it, they would get a £25 bonus at the end of the game. The searching bit has got a muzac in the background (like all good supermarkets.)

After that, each team has a chat with Mr Winton talking about funny things that have happened to them etc. etc. and then one of each team stays to play and the other one goes off to the side.

Two games are then played, mostly first on the buzzers (10 seconds per correct answer) or one of his 'famous' pricing games where a question is asked and if one or two people get it correct they get 10 seconds but if all three get it correct they each get 30 seconds (woooh!). All the games relate to things in the supermarket, be it food or films or stuff like that.

After two games it's time to brrrrrrrriiinnng back you partners! and then they get a go.

After that's done they do the 'round robin'. 6 questions are asked but after each one the partners swap round.

First major annoyance, the fact that have to say '...., Dale' after every answer. 'Fish, Dale', 'Sausage Casserolle, Dale', Antidisestablishmentarianism, Dale'

After the break comes the really good part. 'Are you ready to go shopping?' One of each team goes into the supermarket and does as much shopping as they can in the time they have. There are also bonuses to be picked up in the shape of inflatables, the Pick and Mix counter (if they can weigh 500g of 5 different varieties of sweets, we'll give you 50 quid!) and the managers special where there are loads of cans but only one specially marked can of your colour (another £50) and the shopping list (if the shoppers can find 3 items he announces that's another £100).

Then everyone goes shopping (similtaneously but on a stagger so that everyone finishes at the same time). This is accompanied by Muzac and commentated by somebody whose name I can't remember but he did do the All New Price is Right on SKY TV.

After all that it's time to check 'em out which you don't see. Instead you see one of the lovely checkout ladies who does a phone in competiton 'dial Dale and be a winner', sounds a bit saucy.

Then all the totals are announced and the winners get to do the SuperSweep. This a treasure Hunt where they have to find the 3 specially marked items within a minute and the £2000 is behind the third one. They are given a clue to start off with and there is a clue behind the other items.

Uppers: It's good fun, you cna play the pricing games along at home. Viewers' copetition.
Downers: It's ever so slightly pointless. You might not like the tackyness aspect.

So remember, 'When you're at the supermarket and you hear the beep (beep beep) think of the fun you could be having on SUPERMARKET SWEEP!' Quite a lot actually, it's completely pointless and easy to watch and is ideal 9:25 fare. Dale Winton can even be funny occasionally. It's not something you'd want to watch in a Prime time slot though.

VERDICT: 5.5/10 - Fun but ultimately unfulfilling, ideal in it's time slot though.

Isn't shopping boring?

Other trials...
