For those of you that don't know, chocobos have different abilities based on any of the following:
•Where you catch them
•Their parents' abilities
•What nut you fed their parents
You probably know that a chocobo can be caught anywhere that chocobo tracks are found. Each set of tracks is in a different area and contains different qualities of chocobos. In general, the harder it is to get to a particular set of tracks, the better its chocobos will be. There are 7 sets of chocobo tracks.

Once you have a few good chocobos, it's time to feed, race, and breed them. Buy some greens from either Choco Billy or the Chocobo Sage. The best kind of greens are 'Sylkis Greens' which can be purchased from the Chocobo Sage for 5000 gil. They improve speed, stamina, and intelligence. But watch out! You will probably spend up to 500,000 gil on just one chocobo to get it to optimum statistics.
After raising a chocobo's stats as high as they will go, (e.g., when you feed it a green, the message says "No Improvements") it's time to race it at Gold Saucer. The purpose of this is that two racing class A or S chocobos have a much greater chance of producing desirable offspring than do two racing class C chocobos.
Ok, so you've fed and and raced a pair of chocobos. Now you're ready to breed a special chocobo!

Colored Chocobos
For information on breeding chocobos, you could go to the Chocobo Sage. But getting information out of him takes a rather long time. The better thing to do is to just continue reading here.
•To get a Mountain (green) or River (blue) chocobo, you must breed a 'great chocobo' with a 'good chocobo', using a Carob Nut. The process is not absolute; you may get just a plain yellow chocobo, so just save beforehand so you can come back if you don't get the kind you want.
NOTE:To get one of the above chocobos, you MUST breed a good 'good' and a 'great'. When I first tried this, I made the mistake of thinking that a 'wonderful' chocobo would do. But the two must be one 'good' and one 'great' or you'll get just a plain yellow.
•The Mountain/River chocobo can be created by breeding a mountain chocobo with a river chocobo using a Carob Nut. As its name implies, this chocobo can cross mountains and rivers. It can go pretty-much anywhere on land and shallow water. The only things it can't cross are oceans.
•Once you posess a black chocobo, it's times to go for the greatest chocobo of all, the famous Gold Chocobo. This chocobo can go anywhere on the map; mountains, rivers, and even oceans. To get it, have your black chocobo mate with a 'wonderful' yellow chocobo, and use a Zeio Nut.

Important Locations
•Chocobo Sage: The Chocobo Sage's house is on the North Continent, N.W. of the Bone Village. He can give you information on breeding the various types of chocobos and can sell you nuts and greens.
•Carob Nuts: Carob Nuts can't be bought in stores. You have to steal one from a dragon-like creature called Vlakorados that is found on the Northern Continent. You can also get one at Gold Saucer for 500 GP, but it seems pretty stupid to spend that much on just a Carob Nut.
•Zeio Nuts: A Zeio Nut is required to breed a gold chocobo. They can be stolen from creatures called Goblins on an island north of the Chocobo Farm.

The Materia Caves
The Materia Caves are four different caves located in various places on the map. They each contain a special materia that you can't find anywhere else. You can access them when you have bred the various chocobos.
This list will tell you the materia you will get, the chocobo you need and the location of the materia cave:
1.Mimic Materia, Green Chocobo, go to the northern tip of the Nibel Mtns, then travel due west.
2.Quadra Magic Materia, Blue Chocobo, this cave is on an island N.E. of Mideel. Land the airship just south of the cave and find your way there.
3.HP--MP Materia, Black Chocobo, fly the airship to Corel. Then Fly N.E. over the Mtns, land, and ride the chocobo north.
