The Royal Court of Ekbir

Aithne Feadiel, Queen of Ekbir

Aithne Feadiel is an adventurer. She knows it, the Court knows it, and the people know it. In fact, most of the country was disappointed when the Emperor (then a King) chose her as his wife, since there were no political advantages to the marriage. Even now, Aithne spends no less than three hours a day practicing with the sword and bow, both alone and with others. However, whatever desire for adventure she may have, Aithne has learned to control it over the twenty years she has been Queen. Some now claim she will be an even wiser ruler than the Emperor was. Others point to her unknown background and wonder why she has never revealed where she came from, or even how she and King Feadiel met.
Aithne has two primary concerns at this point. The first is the well-being of the Kingdom of Ekbir. Five years before his death, the Emperor handed control of the Kingdom of Ekbir to Aithne as a way to build her ruling experience for those times when the Emperor had to leave the country. With the demise of her husband, Aithne has a second concern, however. Her son, Rendy Feadiel II, is the heir to the Empire of Ekbir. However, it will be at least a hundred years before he is old enough to take charge of the Empire. The Queen of Ekbir is determined to make sure the Empire still exists when that time comes.

Brangoldorf, Lord High Chamberlain

Brangoldorf is a Githyanki paladin who swore to serve Emperor Rendy Feadiel for the rest of his life after the Emperor saved Brangoldorf's life during a quest on the Astral Plane. What Brangoldorf lacks in administrative skill, he more than makes up for in loyalty. Often working in the background and seldom acknowledged, the late-Emperor and now the Queen know that they can turn to Brangoldorf when they need someone they can trust with their lives.

Eleazor, Lord High Chancellor

Eleazor takes care of the day-to-day affairs of running the country. If the Queen is the top executive of the country, Eleazor is the manager. He takes care of such things as scheduling tax collection and supply wagons, bringing the need for new appointments to the Queen's attention, and determining what business is of sufficient importance to warrant the Queen's attention. When not engaged in his royal duties, Eleazor continues his studies in magic, hoping to someday be a great wizard.

Varek, Lord High Magist

Varek is in charge of handling anything magical that the Kingdom of Ekbir deals with. This includes overseeing the enchantment of magical items in the Royal Armory, overseeing and participating in the enchantment of magical defenses within the Kingdom, heading up research into magical phenomena that affect the Kingdom, and advising the Queen on all matters dealing with wizards and wizardry. Living in a great flying citadel, Varek is acknowledged by most to be second in power only to his former mentor, Gondor, who left the Kingdom of Ekbir to devote himself to the intense study of magic on the Isle of Nowhere.

Evwyr, Lord High Clerist

While the royal family worship the elven god, Ilsundal, most of Ekbir worships Tyr, god of Justice and Law. (Imported to this campaign from Forgotten Realms.) Evwyr is one of the two most powerful patriarchs of Tyr in Western Greyhawk. While a member of the royal court, Evwyr is approached by rulers and pilgrims from the entire region for advice on religious matters. Within the Kingdom of Ekbir, Evwyr is responsible for the religious and spiritual well-being of the Kingdom. He has formed the Council of Clerists, chaired by himself, to obtain input from every religion in Ekbir to help with this task. The council has a representative from every temple that will send one. The council meets twice each year to discuss problems facing the religious communities of Ekbir and propose ways in which Evwyr may advise the Queen to handle these problems.

Tulkas, Lord High Sheriff and Lord High Executor

Tulkas is responsible for law enforcement within the Kingdom of Ekbir. He approaches this in a very personal matter, taking charge himself of teams sent to make important arrests or perform important investigations. Once of the most powerful of these teams is the Executors, for whom Tulkas is the Captain. The Executors are commissioned as both sheriffs and magistrates, and are assigned to particularly crime ridden areas where the normal process of law enforcement has failed to control crime. (More information on the Executors may eventually be found in a separate section.)

Alia, Lord High Inquisitor

Alia (pronounced a-lee-a) is perhaps the single, most well-informed member of the Royal Court. As Lord High Inquisitor, Alia is in charge of the Ekbirian Intelligence organizations, both internal and external. Once an underfunded and inefficient organization, Alia has turned the secret services into a powerful tool for the Queen. While no one but Alia knows the details of these covert operations, it is widely known that when the Queen or some other official needs hard to find information, Alia is the most likely to have it or be able to find it. For this reason, Alia is perhaps the most trusted advisor to the Queen, and is often delegated the task of briefing adventurers and military officers on missions where information already known by the Kingdom of Ekbir may be of use. Alia normally dresses in all black, and has been known to sneak around Castle Feadiel observing all that happens. Many a time has the Queen or another official asked a servant to summon Alia only to have her step out of the shadows and offer her services. Some find this unnerving. Alia claims to just be doing her job.

Polthelas, Chaplain of Ilsundal

While not having much in the way of authority, Polthelas is a valued advisor to the Queen, being a priest of the Queen's patron diety. Some object to the Royal Court including a chaplain of a diety almost unheard of in Ekbir. However, the Queen pays them no heed.

Sachar, Lord High Engineer

Sachar is a scholar who specializes in invention and engineering. He has developed many new devices for Ekbir that incorporate both technology and magic. Sachar is also an illusionist and a priest of Athena. His range of knowledge, therefore, causes the Queen and other members of the court to consult him for advice on things outside of the realm of engineering also.

Jazerotz, Imperial Reeve and Lord High Treasurer

Jazerotz is a scribe who was originally hired by the Emperor to keep track of the books for the Empire of Ekbir. However, the Emperor soon noticed that Jazerotz was a master at investing in and starting successful enterprises. Emperor Feadiel therefore named Jazerotz the Lord High Treasurer, and gave him the task of investing the funds collected from the Ekbirian mines in an attempt to enhance the economy. Over the past ten years, this policy of investment has grown Ekbir's economy sufficiently that the Empire of Ekbir (or was before the war) more productive than the Sultanate of Zeif and the Kingdom of Tusmit combined. Jazerotz, however, derived more pleasure from the knowledge he gains as Imperial Reeve. Rumor is that he has amassed a small fortune himself, but it isn't obvious from his lifestyle. He lives in a small room in Castle Feadiel and owns only a few sets of clothes, a sword (from his adventuring days), and some sandals.

Arutha Palandue, Lord High Justice

Arutha is a paladin of Paladine, God of Justice. He is known to both criminal and citizen alike as the fairest person to sit in the position of Lord High Justice. The clergy of Tyr, in fact, consider him too fair, in some cases. Arutha has always considered the intent of the person a mitigating circumstance in case of minor infractions of the law, whereas Tyr's orthodox followers claim that this causes too many exceptions to the law. So far, the Queen has seen fit to let Arutha run the legal system his way.

Barsad, Imperial Herald

Most of those who come to consult Barsad do so in hopes of obtaining or enhancing their coat of arms. All coats of arms recognized by the Kingdom of Ekbir must come through Barsad. On occasion, however, the Queen will request Barsad's advice on the proper means with which to approach visiting delegations. Barsad is a knight himself, but over the last twelve years his primary experience has been heraldry and etiquette.
