Welcome, Cadets! Here is where you will learn all the tactics it will take to win a combat against an enemy force when it is just YOU on the battlefield, without lancemates. These are the battles in which the most personal honor is won, and where the skill of NOT taking damage is far more important than the skill of causing it to your enemy.
With Regeneration On:
When regeneration is on, the only way to win is to:
Complete the mission objective (if there is one besides "Kill all other mechs"), or
Take every kill you can, and avoid getting taken out at ALL costs.
What this means is, most times in free for all, the one with the most kills is gonna be the one with the least self-destructs, ejects, etc... Most warriors come out of a free for all with a NEGATIVE score... So if you can manage to get only ONE kill, if you never "kill yourself", you'll be doing ok.
Try and use the rest of the Mechwarriors to work for you: Hang back (and behind any terrain obstacles, <even better... on top of buildings>) and watch which mechs are gettting reamed. Once a mech is ALL yellow, or looks to be out of weapons, or IF EITHER LEG IS RED, sneak in and take the kill. This is best achieved by firing a salvo of weapons on whomever is taking out YOUR new target. Most Mechwarriors who are good enough to take out an opposing mech are also good enough to wait to make sure they arn't gettting taken down. When they reorient to find out who has just fired at them, this is your chance to get the kill.... Ignore (as long as you can without taking major damage) the good mech, and destroy the weaker one. In most situations, the mech that was beating on the other has himself taken some damage, and should be at less than maximum efficiency. Once you DO destroy the weakened mech, GET OUT OF THE IMMEDIATE AREA. Even if that mech is damaged also, he is already in a much better tactical position than you, and is already aimed and locked onto you... The time it will take you to reposition yourself is time he can use to destroy you.
IF YOU ARE IN A LIGHT OR MEDIUM MECH:
Your best bet in getting out of his line of fire is to run towards but past him... This way he can get off only a couple good shots before you are out of his firing arc. With any luck, you should be able to get out without any massive damage.
IF YOU ARE IN A HEAVY OR ASSAULT MECH:
In this situation, you're gonna take some damage. But hopefully, it will be nothing major (you ARE in a large mech, are you not?). Crank your mech into reverse, and slowly back away to a more defendable position. Keep taking shots at the arms and legs of the enemy mech, because if you do alot of quick damage, you'll put him in a position of Fight or Flee. The enemy mech will be damaged to a point where the Mechwarrior will have to evade battle (which is good for you) or just keep firing, knowing he's going down and figures he'll get a few good shots in before he is inevitably destroyed (even better).
If there is a mission objective, it will be VERY hard to complete because of regeneration. Mission objectives in FFA usually deal with holding a position for a certain length of time. If regeneration is on, only try to get it if there is an odd number of forces... I.E., two 2 on 2 battles can be raging, and you can sneak in and hold the objective.
With Regeneration OFF:
Stay WELL hidden in the beginning of the battle. Remember that if you get killed, thats it. So don't. Pay very close attention to how the battle is progressing. If a Mechwarrior is really kicking all ass, make sure and take that warrior down. If the battles are pretty much even, and everyone is beating on everyone else evenly, wait until there is only one mech left, and by that time, he should be easy prey.
Watch all the mechs (I.E., cycle targets constantly) and if you see a mech headed in your direction, start heading towards ANOTHER mech. With any luck (and some precise fire) you should be able to get the mech persuing you to engage the mech you are heading towards. Just fire at the mech you are approaching, then get him to fire at you... then evade. If you pass behind him, the one mech persuing you will engage the mech YOU fired at because he will be his closest target, and his more immediate threat.
If there is a mission objective, go for the mission objective ONLY after it appears that any opposition to your attempt will be weak at best.
NOTE! Watch to make sure that noone else trys to complete the objective while you are waiting... If someone looks to be trying to, get them to move (fire at them, scare them off) but don't try to destroy them unless you feel you can do it without taking a large amount of damage.... In Regen Off, you only get one mech, and all damage you take is permanent.
