One-handed Swords

Some of the best weapons in the game are one-handed swords. Like in any item catagory, there are some lousy swords that don't do much to help out. Still, using a one-handed sword permits you to use a shield in the other hand, and this can prove useful in most cases, especially boss fights.

Name: Tyrfing
Description: Cursed dark sword
ATT: -30
What it does: This sword will actually bring your attack down, so don't use it.

Name: Basilard

ATT: +1
What it does: Sometimes will paralyze enemies. This effect won't work on some monsters.

Description: Common short sword
ATT: +2
What it does: Not much, it's just a sword.

Name: Alucart Sword
Description: Resembles family sword
ATT: +2
What it does: While this sword sucks, when the ATT button is held down, the sword will hit an enemy twice. Also, when worn with the Alucart Shield and the Alucart Mail, Alucard's luck will shoot up 30 points.

Name: Gladius
Description: Sword of ancient Rome
ATT: +3

Name: Chakram
Description: Sikh steel throwing ring
ATT: +15
What it does: Yes, it's the same thing Xena uses! Okay, so it really isn't a sword, but it's still cool. You just throw it, and it zips back to Al.

Name: Damascus Sword
Description: Fine sword honed to razor-edge
ATT: +17
What it does: Just a sword, although is the best sword for the first half of the game.

Name: Shotel

What it does: When the combo D-DF-F+ATT is used, the sword flies forward and then flies back to Alucard, much like the Chakram.

What it does: Just another sword.

Name: Bastard sword
Description: Standard sword
ATT: +20
What it does: Yet another sword.

Name: Heaven Sword

ATT: +21
DEF: -2
What it does: Similar to the Runesword, but with less reach and a lower ATT. When the combo B-F+ATT is entered, the sword will fly forward a bit farther.

Name: Talwar
Description: Curved Indian sword
ATT: +22
What it does: It's just a sword.

Name: Combat Knife
Description: Flat combat dagger
ATT: +24
What it does: When either combo D-DF-F+ATT or B-F+ATT is entered, Alucard swings the knife like a short sword.

Name: Gurthang
Description: Gets stronger when bloodied
ATT: + 25
DEF: +1
What it does: When Alucard goes into "Dark Metamorphisis" and uses the Gurthang, his total ATT (including the sword and his strength) doubles. This effect wears off as soon as the spell wears off.

Name: Vorpal Blade
Description: Slices cleanly through enemies
ATT: +25
What it does: Has a similar attack to the Crissaegrim, but only attacks with one blade, not four.

Name: Icebrand
Description: Ice sword of Mim
ATT: +25
What it does: Adds ice element to attacks, so is useful against fire-based enemies. When the combo D-DF-F+ATT is entered, the sword creates a powerful "icy blast".

Name: Firebrand
Description: Fire sword of Oberon
ATT: +25
What it does: Adds fire element to attacks, so it's usefuly against ice-based enemies. When the combo D-DF-F+ATT is enetered, a rush of flames shoot out from the sword as Alucard swings it.

Name: Thunderbrand
Description: Lightning sword of Indra
ATT: +25
What it does: Adds lightning element to attacks. When the combo D-DF-F+ATT is entered, the sword crackles with electricity and shoots several bolts of lightning forward.

What it does: Adds dark element to attacks, so it's useful against holy-based enemies.

What it does: Just a sword with a weird name.

Name: Gram
Description: The sword named Gram
ATT: +30
What it does: Just another sword with a weird name.

Name: Terminus Est
Description: Poisoned executioner's sword
ATT: +32
DEF: +2
What it does: Even though it says so, this sword doesn't add a poison element to its attacks. Still, it's name is pretty cool, because "Terminus est" is Latin for "it ends".

Name: Marsil
Description: Powerful sword of flame
ATT: +33
DEF: +1
What it does: This sword's normal attack is identical to the "special power" of the Firebrand. Once again, this sword is fire-based. When the combo D-DF-F+ATT is entered, strong flaming explosions shoot out from the sword in all directions to cover most of the screen.

Name: Dark Blade
Description: Sword forged by elves
ATT: +35
DEF: +2
What it does: It's just a sword.

Name: Crissaegrim
Description: Countless blades dice enemy
ATT: +36
DEF: +1
What it does: My favorite sword! Although this sword doesn't have any special combo moves on it, Alucard doesn't have to stop to swing it. That means he can run and swing the Crissaegrim without stopping at all. Also, for every time this sword is swung, four blades hit the enemy. not just one. So in actuality, the ATT is +144! With these facts and the fact that the Crissaegrim has a long reach, it's no wonder that it's my favorite sword.

Name: Mourneblade
Description: Feeds upon enemy's souls
ATT: +37
DEF: +1
What it does: For everything this sword hits (and that means enemies, torches and candles), 8 HP is sucked from whatever is hit and goes directly to Alucard. An easy way to get HP.

Name: Badelaire
Description: Power increases with game play
ATT: ???
What it does: I'm not too sure of the rate the attack power goes up, but from the start, the ATT is +37. However, about 35 levels or so later in the game, using no other weapon but this sword, my sister said that it had an ATT of +45.

Name: Mablung Sword
Description: Spirit sword--improves DEF
ATT: +39
DEF: +2
What it does: Just shoots Alucard's defense up two points.

Name: Runesword
Description: Flying rune-inscribed sword
ATT: +40
DEF: -4
What it does: This sword flies from Alucard's hand in an arc, and zips back to him. The "trail" that it leaves says something too... (see "Weird Stuff" section).

Name: Alucard Sword
Description: Mother's family heirloom
ATT: +42
What it does: Since this is actually Alucard's sword, he can swing it more quickly than any other weapon. When the combo D-DF-F+ATT is entered, Alucard darts forward, turns to quickly slash the back of an enemy twice, then zips back to where he originally was standing (yes, the man can move that fast!) Not only that, but if you hold in the ATT button, the sword will hit an enemy twice (just like the Alucart Sword).

Name: Sword Familiar
Description: Sentient sword familiar
ATT: +50 to +99
What it does: This sword isn't available into your invantory until you get the Sword Familiar up to level 50. After that, it will only be in your invantory if you have the Sword Card relic turned off. Whatever level the Sword Familiar is at will be its attack power (Ex: The Sword is at lvl 62, so it's ATT will be +62).
