SUBJECT: JONATHAN WARD
File No.:007143PK
During the transit to the Inner Sphere, Star Commander Jonathan meets Wolf Khan Natasha Kerensky and Star Commander Phelan (a bondsman captured from the mercenary Kell Hounds who became a Clan MechWarrior). These two individuals introduces Jonathan to the Warden ideals. They teach the young MechWarrior that the Clans was formed not to capture nor destroy the Inner Sphere barbarians but to protect them, "to ward humanity from all threats, internally and externally". Star Commander Jonathan embraces the Warden cause.
This was not to be. For in December 3051, Clan Jade Falcon units raids Bessarabia. The 12th Falcon Regulars attacks the world looking for isorla and genetic materials. As the Falcons repulse the primary Wolf defenders, Star Commander Jonathan leads his jump jet-equipped OmniMechs into action. In his jump capable Timber Wolf OmniMech, Jonathan outflanks the Falcon's recon units at Vulture's Crest. Engaging a Warhawk, Jonathan uses his Timber Wolf's superior mobility to negate the Warhawk's accuracy. In the end the Warhawk fell, and the two Falcon stars are savaged by Jonathan's Star and aerospace support. As the Wolf main force arrive to engage the Falcons, the Falcons disengaged and withdraw to their DropShips.
Following the Jade Falcon raid, no combat action is reported for Star Commander Jonathan. Until April of 3052, when ilKhan Ulric Kerensky declared that the Clans were going to do battle against ComStar and it's military arm the Com Guards on Tukayyid. The 8th Strikers are to be attached to the Wolf reserve forces for the battle. Star Commander Jonathan tenaciously trains with the 8th Strikers.
On the 1st of May 3052, the Clans arrive in Tukayyid. Twenty-five Galaxies from seven Warrior Clans converge on the planet. Awaiting them are fifty Com Guard divisions. Under the command of Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht, trained in Star League tactics and equipped with Star League BattleMechs and equipment, the Com Guards represent the best warriors the Inner Sphere can offer.
Clan Wolf arrives on the planet on the 6th, five days after the other Clans arrived. The Wolves immediately moves for Skupo, it's first objective. The 8th Strikers are sent as combat reserves, attached to defend the Wolf supply depots.
First action for Star Commander Jonathan came on the 10th of May when Com Guard armor came attacking the Striker perimeter. Jonathan's Star engages the Manticore tanks. As his Starmates approach the burning tanks, Com Guard aerospace fighters make an attack run. Jonathan's OmniMechs, again equipped with energy weapons and jump jets, put up heavy antiaircraft fire. In the end, three Manticore tanks and 2 aerospace fighters are lost by the Com Guards, but two OmniMechs are damaged.
On the stormy evening of the 16th of May, as the Clan Wolf engages the Com Guards in the their largest attack, a Com Guard Fortress-Class DropShip launch a daring raid into the Wolf supply bases. A company of Com Guard Mechs , plus armor, infantry and aerospace units break thru to Star Commander Jonathan's position. Together with Elementals and bondsmen led by Ragnar, the former Prince of the Free Rasalhague Republic, Jonathan forces puts up heavy defensive fire. The Com Guard commander, in a Emperor, the heaviest BattleMech engaged, smashes the head of a Wolf Hellbringer with a Death-From-Above attack. Jonathan engages the Emperor, scoring hits from his Timber Wolf's ER Large Lasers. The two giant BattleMechs duels in a slugfest, Jonathan trading LRM and laser fire for pulse lasers and cluster LB-X rounds. As the smoke mixes with the rain and darkness, visibility is hampered with flashes of explosions and weapons fire. Jonathan succeed in penetrating the Emperor's fusion engine, causing a massive explosion that smashes his Timber Wolf's left side. Seeing their commander fallen, the Com Guard units retreat to their DropShip. Wolf MechWarrior Noah, Jonathan's sibko trainer, destroys the DropShip with PPC fire from his Warhawk into the DropShip's Mech bay, detonating it's carried munitions. As the fighting subsides, the Com Guards loses nine BattleMechs, 6 tanks, 2 aerospace fighters, and a Fortress-Class DropShip with 3 BattleMechs and several hundred infantrymen captured, while the Wolves lost 3 OmniMechs and 14 Elementals and 64 infantrymen. Jonathan is severely wounded after the battle. And in a ceremony after the fighting, Jonathan is promoted to Star Captain and given command of the 8th Strikers, now renamed the 5th Wolf Guards.
In the end of the Battle of Tukayyid, only Clan Wolf succeeds in capturing both their objectives. The rest of the participating Clans only succeeded in forcing a draw or were destroyed by the Com Guards. As is bargained, the defeated Clans sign the Truce of Tukayyid, which forbid the Clans from advancing from Terra for fifteen years.
During the time of the Truce, the 5th Wolf Guards participate in several Trials of Possession between Clan Wolf and the other Clans, most notably against the Jade Falcons and the Smoke Jaguars.
In the Clan Wolf Trial of Possession for genetic material on Schulyer against Smoke Jaguar in 3056, Star Captain Jonathan leads his 5th Wolf Guards in a running battle against the 10th Jaguar Dragoons and the 18th Jaguar Assault Cluster, leading them on a chase across the planet's vast Argon Plain while elements of the 13th Wolf Guards raid the Smoke Jaguar base.
As the relevant peace falls over much of the Inner Sphere and the Clan Occupation Zones, Clan Warriors settle to a routine of garrison and raiding. Although this bodes well for the veteran Warden Clansmen, many young Warriors, bereft of the chance to fight, protest the Truce. The beginnings of a massive shift new Clan Warriors to the Crusader cause has sprouted.
On August 3057, the Grand Kurultai convened on Tamar to hear the charges levied on ilKhan Ulric Kerensky. Khan Elias Crichell, Khan of the Jade Falcons, an ardent Crusader enemy of ilKhan Ulric, spoke for the prosecution. He charged that Ulric conspired with ComStar's Precentor Martial Focht and Prince Victor Ian Steiner-Davion of the Federated Commonwealth, in a plot to unite the Inner Sphere into a new Star League, with Davion on its throne and the Clans as it's military might. Although baseless and untrue, the Khans voted to oust Ulric as ilKhan. Ulric answered back by challenging the Jade Falcons to a Trial of Refusal between them and Ulric's Wolves. The Jade Falcon Khan, surprised, reluctanly accepted.
Ulric Kerensky, upon received word that charges were brought up against him, formulated a plan to save the Warden Wolves, and to damage the Crusader Clans. He challenges the stronges Crusader Clan, Jade Falcons, to a war that would decimate both Clans. His plan has him and Khan Natasha Kerensky leading Wolf forces made up of Crusader supporters to savagely attack the Jade Falcons, while the Warden Wolves will go into exile in the Inner Sphere, with the bulk of the Wolves lower caste and equipment, including the precious genetic materials of Alexander and Nicholas Kerensky , and the Wolf Clan's forebears. It is Ulric hope that this war will seriously hurt the Crusaders, and the Crusader Wolf elements, from breaking the Truce and restarting the invasion of the Inner Sphere.
Star Captain Jonathan and his 5th Wolf Guards are assigned to Khan Phelan Ward's battlegroup. They first participate in the Sudeten, although in a support role to Khan Phelan's 4th Wolf Guards and 16th Battle Cluster.
As word of the other Wolf battlegroups successes reach the Warden Wolves, Khan Phelan Ward orders his forces to Morges, on the Lyran Alliance side of the Clan front. There the Wardens join forces with the Kell Hounds, the mercenary unit commanded by Khan Phelan's father, Colonel Morgan Kell. The joint forces prepare defenses against the Jade Falcons.
On December, 3057, two Galaxies of Clan Jade Falcon arrive on Morges. They declare that ilKhan Ulric Kerensky and Khan Natasha Kerensky are killed in their offensives, Khan Phelan Ward's Bloodname is removed from him and that the other Wolves have been Absorbed. They quickly attack the joint defenders on the icy plains. After initial successes against the invaders, the Wolf Clan-Kell Hounds are forced to withdraw. Only a successful raid on the Jade Falcon supply bases by Khan Phelan Ward and his 4th Wolf Guards stop the Crusader offensive.
On December 22, 3057, on the frozen Garrik Hills, the 5th Wolf Guards swung into combat. The Jade Falcons' 9th Talon Cluster, using the cover of night, broke thru the Kell Hound positions and threatens the Wolf flanks. Star Captain Jonathan's 5th Wolf Guards are caught in an open position in the hillsides. Trading PPC and laserfire with the enemy's heavy autocannons, the 5th Wolf Guards hits the advancing Falcons head on. Jonathan's Timber Wolf first destroys an Adder, then kills a Hellhound pilot with a head shot. A Jade Falcon Turkina Assault OmniMech, the largest and newest OmniMech in the field, engages Jonathan. Both MechWarriors deftly manuever their OmniMechs, jumping and jostling for position, all the while blazing away at each other with savage weapons fire. The extreme heat from energy weapons begin to melt the ice, and the BattleMechs, Elementals and other forces begin to slide and fall. A massive avalanche half buries Jonathan's OmniMech in ice and snow. The Turkin moves for the kill. As the Jade Falcon OmniMech aims it's weapons arm, Jonathan ignites his Timber Wolf's jump jets. The exhaust jetfire hits the Turkina's cockpit, burning the pilot alive. Jonathan OmniMech is propelled free, and lands near the downed Jade Falcon. The Jade Falcons withdraw from the battle, their attack stopped and routed.
Three days later on Christmas Day, 3057, the combined Wolf Clan-Kell Hound aerospace wings engage and destroys the Jade Falcons fighters in a great air battle. They quickly attack the remaining Jade Falcon ground forces. In the aftermath of the fighting, the victorious Wolves approach the Falcons and see the bloodbath.
It was ended. The Jade Falcons, who had come to Morges to destroy the Wolves, had themselves been destroyed. The brutal campaign called the Refusal War was over, and the Wolf Clan had triumphed.
The shattered touman of the Warden Wolves arrives on the planet Arc Royal with the Kell Hounds. There they begin their exile from the Clans. Khan Phelan Ward assembles the exiles to announce the news from the Clan homeworlds, that Clan Jade Falcon has decreed themselves the victors of the Refusal War and demanded the Absorption of the Wolves into their Clan. The Warden Wolves were Abjured, along with their Bloodnames and heritage, and are to be considered bandits.
As the shocked exiles contemplate their fate, Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht of ComStar arrives. He bears with him a holovid from the late ilKhan Ulric Kerensky. Ulric explains why he initiated the Refusal War, and commands the Wardens to continue to propagate the traditions of the Wolf Clan in the Inner Sphere, and work to thwart any Crusader ambitions to renew the Clan invasion. He also creates an new Bloodname of Kell, and grants the first bloodheritage to Khan Phelan.
