The Age of Dreams

Long Ago, beyond the reckoning of men, there were Seven Eras that made up the time now often called the Age of Dreams. These were the Era of the Elder Gods, the Era of Titans, the First Saurial Era, The Batrachian Era, the Era of the Elder Sidhe, the Era of the Demon Hosts (also known as the Era of the Dhaigharu)and the Era of the Younger Gods also called the Second Saurial Era. In each of these eras, the world of H'kartha was known by a different name, and was of different appearance. Each of these eras of the Age of Dreams are as if but a dream because not only did they occur in the distant past, but a powerful artifact, the Paal taleyun Dyumbe (Temporal Resonator) was invoked creating such a devestation across time and space that little from this era survives, and even the memories of the Gods are vague about this period. Even the name Paal Taleyun Dyumbe is known by few creatures mortal and immortal, and it is known to sages and spirits more by its more vulgar name, the Demonstone. Even the name Demonstone is known to even most of the most exalted of scholars only as an object related to great horror and destruction, without any specifics, merely causing a shudder of fear when mentioned to such venerables.

The Demonstone

The Paal taleyun Dyumbe was created in some unfanthomable paradox during both some future era in the mists of the dreamland known as the All Tomorrows and sometime in dreamlands that echo of the distant past. It is an artifact that transcends space and time, and can be usedfor powerful and blasphemous magics. It is known as the destroyer of worlds, and it has destroyed and remade the world we now know as H'kartha in many catastrophic events. At some point in history, it came into the hands of the Titan Taleth-Krun. Taleth-Krun began life as a Titan (see Era of Titans below) an ancient race, existing somewhere between mortal and god, demiurges. Taleth-krun was one of those Titans who made a dark pact with the Dark Forces of Chaos, the quasi-sentient power sometimes called Khosûl. These Titans were known as the "Rhalyune Gharlunch" or sometimes simply the "Old Ones". One may call them arch-demons, or devils, as they were/are creatures of utter evil. These beings spawned races of great evil and great cunning Slaad, Iuz, Glabrezu,Bilwhr, and Aisharpa as well as monsters of might but typically lesser intellect such as the Vrock, Yzarn, Utharg and Dalamu. These creatures enslaved other, more nobler races whose names have been lost to time.

The one called Taleth-Krun used the Paal taleyun Dyumbe to alter his form, so that he could transcend time, and work his evil without the normal limitations of the laws of space and time. Then he used the Paal taleyun Dyumbe to open a portal to another dimension existing beyond space and time, where terrible demons dwell. These demons were known as the al-Qaddeb Morgot-Lepkosh, Bearers of Plague and Pestilence. Taleth-Krun from his lair carved out in the chaos of the Dawn of Time, used the to inflict havoc throughout the ages. Some say this is how the Paal taleyun Dyumbe came to be called the Demonstone. Others say it was named thus because it was used to slay Taleth-Krun. That tale itself is worth telling. For Taleth-Krun while inflicting many terrible plagues and famines on the world was not able to complete his work, which was the total destruction of all life on the world we now call H'kartha. For the greatest of the Elementals of Time, the Sibyls, sought to end the disruptions in the fabric of the universe that Taleth-Krun was creating. They followed the ripples back through time and sent the great Kyprosi thief Broger to steal the Demonstone and take it to a place of safety. The rifts of dislocation were closed, although much of the damage created by Taleth-krun remained as scars on the healing fabric of the Universe.

In the Age of Wonders it was used by an Abudel ed-Dauf,Tlakael of the Hjaani to destroy Taleth-Krun and his demonhost. Abudel ed-Dauf's wife and children had been killed in one of the terrible plagues unleashed by Taleth-Krun. While he could not undue these events, Abudel sought revenge. He succeeded. Where Taleth-Krun was destroyed,a unholy taint was laid. The dark blemish on Gondwana lies below the spot where the The orc citadel Fel-gador now stands. The evil tendrils of that evil stain pollutes the marshes of the Eastern Delta, cursing the region to this day. Abudel had a pyrhhic victory. For in the battle in which he slew Taleth-Krun and banished his demon host, the mage lost possession of the demonstone. That loss had repercussions through time and space. The mage who had sought to eliminate a terrible evil from the world, managed only to multiply the sorrows of the universe.

Era of the Elder Gods

During the Era of the Elder Gods, this world was known as Tzaghashalan. There were five continents and nine seas. Each of the Elder Gods had a race of peoples that served as instruments of divine will. The yoke of the gods over these races was heavy, they were not beigns of free will. Many of these races became the creatures of the spirit world whose fickle and rebellious nature continues as a reaction to the burdens imposed on them by the elder gods. Others exist as near forgotten remnants: The mad Ophidians-becursed and then beloved of the elder goddess Lokatha, the cruel Ixitxachitl, the terrible Yehan-Uli (Mind Devourers), the fierce Thri-Kreen, the benevolent Shedu, and the fierce Lammasu. The end of this era saw the banishment of most of the elder gods from the universe, they now only have a bare connection to the Helix by means of items of power known as the Elder Artifacts. A few of the Elder Gods lingered on in the Helix, shadows of their former glory. Most traces of this era were obliterated by the workings of the Demonstone. All five continents were uttely destroyed, and four new continents emerged. Only buried on scattered lonely archipelagos, all that remain of the lost continents, do relics of this bygone age exist.

Era of the Titans

During much of this era, the world existed without gods. Only spirits, mortal creatures and quasi-mortal creatures existed. In the latter category were the Titans. At the end of the Era,the Titans divided into two main camps: those who aligned themselves with the dark force of Khosûl and those who aligned themselves with the creative force Pròvó. This alignment allowed the Titans to transcend their mortal forms and become gods. There was a great war between two groups of Titans. This was known as Ragnorak, the War of the Gods. The Titans aligned with Pròvó were victorious, and they became what later sages called The Younger Gods. Most traces of this era were obliterated by the workings of the Demonstone. The Younger Gods themselves were imprisoned in a pocket dimension, and didn't manage to free themsleves until the beginning of the Second Saurial Age, also known as the Era of the Younger Gods. With the cataclasm of the Demonstone the four continents of this age saw violent tumult, mountains rose, inland seas appeared, river changed their course. While few traces of this era survive today, many relics, ruins and creatures of this era survived into the First Saurial Era.

First Saurial Era

During this era the world was known as Telamon. A race of Dragon-men dominated the world at this time. That world had four continents, of which only one, that which we call Gondwana, exists today. The Haz are the best sources of information on the First Saurial Age, for they have found its relics in their travels across the High Desert. Still very little is known of this world. Two new continents Mu and Rhushan (later called Atlantis) were created in the cataclysm of the Demonstone that ended this age.

The Batrachian Era

During this era, the world then known as Syriope, had three continents: Ghazulan (now Gondwana), Mu and Rhushan. The amphibious race known as the Batrachians are a legacy of this former age. The world was ruled by tyrannical overlords from another dimension called the Slaad, a race of demons from the Era of Titans. Only in Western Gondwana does this ancient civilization still linger, still ruled by the dark Slaadi. Most of the Slaadi are said to have fled to the stars during the tumult of the Demonstone that ended this era.

Era of the Elder Sidhe

Elves originated on the world of H'kartha(then known as Kai-Kalishana) and spread across the helix during this era. At first a savage and barbarous race, they became a graceful, poetic and learned people under the tutelerage of a mysterious race called the Siderthe. Through the assistance of the Siderthe they spread throughout the helix acting as the agents and allies of their patrons. The continent of Rushan was known as Atlantis during this era, and was the home of the bulk of the six elven nations that comprised the Elder Sidhe. It was destroyed and all that remains of it the archipelagos of Kashima, Dhaigur and Sorenso. The continent of Mu was inhabited by tribes of humans who remained savages forever threatening the elvish colonies there. Ghazulan (Gondwana) was an inhospitable land, inhabited by the remnants of the Batrachians. Much of the continent was covered either in swamps or ravaged by fiery volcanoes.

Second Saurial Era

The Haz are a legacy of the Second Saurial Age where the world had but two continents: Mu and Ghazulan. Forests of Giant Ferns and Cycads covered much the world of H'kartha. It was a warm, moist world. Giant reptiles dwelled in the wilderlands. The Haz have a detailed history of this age recorded in their songs, but they do not share most this information with outsiders. According to the Haz their will be a Third Saurial Age, when the deserts will retreat and their race will once again dominate the world.

Age of Turmoil.
