Cyberpunk in the Movies

For some reason there are few films that seem to capture a true cyberpunk feeling, and over time I'll try track a few down and mention them here.

Brazil

Now I'm partial to anything Terry Gilliam does, but this may well be one of the finest cyberpunk films ever, though most might not think of it that way. It is set in a kinda film noir distopia setting, and may well have started that whole antiquated future look we see in movies like Blade Runner (though I might have that backwards...who knows?) Brazil is the story of a junior exec working for the Ministry of Information. The MOI is the watchdog that oversees the lives' of every citizen, to make sure they are obeying the law...all the time, and anywhere. The MOI is a law unto itself, answerable only to itself. But a mistake is made allowing a series of improbably events to spiral out of control as the beauracracy goes mad. A man isn't arrested, an air conditioner gets fixed, the repair men get killed and the exec is tagged as a terrorist to be eliminated, all for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Paranoia at its highest. With some nifty themes about dealing with a new age, the pursuit of beauty and the power of a system out of control.

Blade Runner

Whenever speaking of cyberpunk films you kinda have to mention this one. The model city of the future. Personally I prefer the original with the voice over. One extra scene in the director's cut and no voice over doesn't do it for me (sorry I liked the kinda gritty 20's detective story feeling the voice over gave). The hunt for replicants and the nature of life itself. A corporation arrogant enough to make life itself, and the CEO pays for it. The stuff of cyberpunk all the way. If you've ever wanted to see a good setting to describe for your players this is it.

Johnny Mneumonic

Okay forget everything in this film up till the end...the netrunning combat...the rest is just a mismash of old Gibson ideas. The bridge from Virtual Light and that really terrible killer cyborg...gag... well the molly wire was well done. And I just like Molly (Think she's called Anne in the novelization, but been a while), even without the built in sunglasses...but what's nerve attenuation syndrome? But that net combat sequence looks cool, even captures much of the feeling of netrunning.

Aliens

Perhaps one of the coolest movies of all time. Though set much further in the future, it has a distinct cyberpunk flavor to it, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. High tech weapons, grunts with attitudes, big bad monsters...what more can you ask for? Oh yeh and a Corp. willing to kill his teammates for an exclusive deal. How much more cyberpunk can you get?

Max Headroom

Okay so its not neccessarily the most serious of films, or TV series for that matter. But it did a very good job of portraying parts of 2020's reality. From MediaCorps to pirate radio's to cybernetics gone haywire...way cool.

Total Recall

Okay if we overlook the story and just look at the setting we get a nice glimpse of cyberpunk's 2020. And that Recall memory trip is a better idea for ICE than most I've seen of late. Oh yeh some nifty tech to boot.

The Matrix

Blockbuster hit of the moment. The Matrix is a reversal of the usual cyberpunk story. In the Matrix everyone lives inside the Net, all the time, save those few who know the truth. And what is that truth? That mankind has lost a great war and serves as a living power supply to their vanquishers. The setting doesn't really display netcombat but gives a very good idea of what a SIM based game or setting might be like. Willpower and perception are keys to ability. Overall the movie just kicks ass.

Over time I'll occassionally add things I feel fit on this page. Reformatted December 17th, 2000.
