The Editor-in-Chief of the Den Speaks Out

Can schools and Magic really coexist?

To many people, school is a place of learning, where strict morals are to be upheld. To others, it's a place where you can meet people, have fun, and maybe learn a little something along the way. Some people, including myself and most of the Den staff, like to bring our cards with us when we go to school, so we may play during our free time. Some school officals believe that all card playing can be gambled upon and hence should not be allowed on campus. Others, who generally are the more religious type (no offense to any of my readers, of course), believe Magic cards are demonic and should not be played anywhere.

Both of these arguments have valid points. To some people, the card content is questionable and it is probably a bad idea to play if these cards scare you. As for the gambling argument, it is true. Absolutely. Without a doubt, Magic can, and is, gambled upon. Every time someone plays for ante, they're gambling. But most players DON'T gamble. Just as most football players DON'T point shave. Neither of these is a reason to ban the game of football or Magic.

Most schools don't mind if people play during their free periods, so long as there is no gambling. Some will even go so far as to make a "Gaming Club" in which to play Magic, and other CCG's. Many will allow students to make such an organization, if there are enough people interested.

Of course, some schools ban all playing cards outright. If you're really that concerned, talk to your principal/dean. They may be willing to concede the point if they are convinced. Also, don't just go and play anyway, show respect for authority by not playing and it will look much better. Most of all, don't yell and scream, etc. Ask your administrator for a meeting in which you can calmly explain why you feel cards shouldn't be banned. Maybe they'll bring it to the attention of the school board and make some changes. It's worth a shot.

Anyway, I'll go now, since you now know all you need to. Good luck, and I'll see you later!
