Border Skirmishes
Reports from the Frontier Regiments indicate that there have been several skirmishes along the Germanic border in the Lorraine region, especially in the vicinity of the town of Metz. With the Winter fast approaching, it seems that several companies of unemployed mercenaries and bands of deserters from the fighting in the German states have taken to looting settlements on French soil rather than the devestated lands from which they have come. The garrison regiments and volunteer units were quickly deployed throughout the area to defend our towns and villages and hunt down the marauders where possible. The Gascon Regiment had the greatest success as it arrived at Pont-a-Mousson just in time to prevent the escape of a small group of bandits by securing a bridge across the Moselle. With flames still rising from nearby homesteads the Gascons showed little mercy towards their quarry. Elsewhere, French troops stayed mainly on the defensive as restrictive terrain and sodden ground made manoeuvre difficult. A company of the 2nd Battalion Picardy Musketeers was ambushed by mercenaries as it entered a narrow valley and several men were lost, including Captain Giovann Dante Machiavel. Jacques Inzebox had a lucky escape while leading his column as his mount was killed by the initial enemy volley of musket fire. Major Robespierre O'Reilly was another casualty after leading his men, rapier in hand, into the thick of the fighting. Gestion Onyon and Didier d'News each received a mention in despatches for their heroics, and Jacques L'Bang was promoted to Brevet Captain. |

New Recruits
Colonel Brisbois has responded to the swelling in numbers of the Cardinal's Guard by conducting a recruiting drive for his own regiment. Rene Vaplus and Queue de Cheval both joined the King's Musketeers as privates and spent a large part of the month on duty in barracks, though Rene did find time to join his new commanding officer at Bothwells. Meanwhile, recent recruit to the Cardinal's Guard, Michel N'Pneu, returned from the frontier to find he had been assigned as a trooper in His Emminence's Escort. |
Peace and Quiet
The usual duelling haunts have been strangely quiet of late. The only encounter of November was between Julien ā Quse of the Crown Prince Cuirassiers and Gaston de Sancerre of the Royal Marines. At least this pair made some noise clashing blades as Julien repeatedly blocked his opponent's cutlass swings, without managing to strike home himself. Eventually Gaston got to feel the sharp edge of ā Quse's sabre, offering his surrender on being wounded for the second time. |
Social Column
Frere Jacques was in the mood for celebrating after learning of his appointment as Minister without Portfolio and the results of the latest audit of the Widows' and Orphans' Fund. At the start of November he held a concert at the Fleur featuring the choir of Notre Republic. The choir boys brought down the house and it wasn't just the friars chanting for an encore of their smash hit "I'm the Lord in Heaven, You Gotta Pray to Me the Right Way". Some grumbling was heard about the userous 5 cr fee charged by Le Bass for tickets, and many commented that all the best seats went to the criminal conspiracy know only as 'Le Scalpers'. The following week the Bishop gave a sermon "God hates scalpers", and things seemed to have been patched up with Michel LaCroix as our favourite artist got a favourable mention for his donations to the widows and orphans. Back at St Martin's there were some raised eyebrows in the congregation as Father de Villain accused Frere Jacques of being "a pimp to the aristocracy." |
The Paris Monthly LotteryIt could be vous!tickets only 20 cr each |
Michel LaCroix and Roger de Villain also hosted parties this month. De Villain's was a modest affair at Bothwells in contrast to Michel's classless gathering which left little room to mingle in his mansion as nobles and commoners enjoyed his hospitality. There was brief chaos when Frere Jacques and Laura arrived at the head of that cadre of bible wielding, devil casting-out friars known to church-goers as 'the P-team', who proceeded to sample all the beverages and 'inspect' all the young maidens before announcing the mansion "Pagan Free". Fortunately the P-team was not required when Frere Jacques hosted a "Feast of Thankfulness" at the Fleur with Laura. |
Around and About
Anton St Vierre was found not guilty of the charge of attempted bribery after the prosecuting counsel arrived in court ten minutes late claiming his dog had eaten his papers concerning the case. Anton rested for most of the month and with this worry of his mind it seems he may well be on the way to a full recovery from his long-term illness. Newcomer to Paris, Jean Claude du Lac, enrolled as a Subaltern in the 27th Musketeers before going on to cause some controversy by courting Jill Ette and then escorting her to church and his club while Jacques L'Bang was away on campaign with his battalion. Surely the Royal Marine Captain will be wanting to have some words with this upstart on his return to the city. In between social engagements, Gordon Zola, Chicot d'Armagnac and Jean-Pierre Brisbois all made time to practise with their regimental weapons at Le Tigre, while Gaston de Sancerre has improved his technique enough to become a cutlass student of Le Chat. Finally, Chancellor Guy Ropes has announced that an expedition will set sail next month for Africa. Potential investors should contact the Chancellor's department and Marine volunteers who are willing to spend Christmas at sea are advised to see their commanding officer. |

At the moment all mail is being forwarded to the Yahoo account so please don't copy messages to both addresses.
Regimental Duties - Buried within the rules somewhere it states that it is the Battalion commander who decides whether subalterns/privates are excused duties. If your Btn CO is a PC then he has to order this; if it is an NPC you can ask to be excused in your orders. Either way, only one week of duties can be excused (i.e. a private must still do a minimum of one week per month).
Expedition to Africa - This is a four month round trip. Details are in the Investments section of the house rules.
Orders - Please remember to put your character initials and the game month in the subject header for your orders. Also, please try to avoid waiting for the last minute to submit orders if possible as it will minimise any delays due to queries over orders and chasing people up. Thanks.

French Letters
To F. Jaques
Dear Sir,I find your actions regarding my end of October party to be an insult on my character, which has as of yet remained unblemished. Had you taken your nose out of the books on how to bake a witch, you would have noted that the party I hosted made no reference to that Pagan Holiday that you are so concerned about. If that was not enough, my holding of the party on a night other than the night of that celebration should have been a clue as well.
Alas, again with high positions comes self rightousness. If you are so intent on stamping out pagan practices, I would hope to see you take you holy behind on one of the many overseas voyages to visit the ungodly around the world. Instead, you sit here awaiting the chance to sniff anything that your loosened imagination could possibly point to as evil.
For your knowledge, all guest at my house behaved themselves in proper Christian fashion. No babies were slaughtered, nor any evil spell cast. I do not recall seeing devils or demons among us, except on the faces of your lynch mob outside my door. They were wearing expressions best left to the unholy or the Spaniards. Perhaps you would wish to come to my house this month to insure that nothing now haunts the manor?
In closing, please keep your religous zealotry in check, unless you actually have reason to point your finger. I offer you an invition to personally attend any of my social gatherings, so that the church can see that the LaCroix are not their enemies.
Michel LaCroix
Guidance from God, not fools!
God is dead! At least, so might a man believe if he saw the spiritual leadership under which our once great Church endures. Our Bishops guzzle from the trough and belch their frustrations upon the populace and good honest working men. Why, the jealous Frere Jacques incites the peasantry of Paris to rise up and riot against even those whom the King himself has honoured.Such disgrace can not be allowed to endure and thus I have, after long prayer, been compelled to call for the resignations of all of the clergy above the rank of Pastor to make way for a more vibrant and stronger Church to lead us into the next decade, the next century and, our inheritors willing, the next millenium.
Father de Villain.
Letter to the Father
Cher Father,Although I understand that these indeed can be disturbing times, I am astounded that you would call for the resignation of the Holy Father. Sir does not the church call for obedience to he who His Holiness himself has placed here to guard our souls. Temper your voice sir! For I fear that more than the blade may await you if you pursue this matter. Whereas the blade may destroy the body, rebellion in the church can bring hellfire to destroy the soul! I urge you as a God Fearing man of France. Hoping soon to be in the service of our King, to look deeply inward in spiritual contemplation. Perhaps your passion has gotten the best of you.
I am most sincerely yours,
Jean Claude du Lac
Poor N'Pneu...
Dear Baron Brisbois, Colonel of the King's Musketeers! As we have already discussed, I hereby apply for application in Paris' finest regiment. I'll be most happy to serve our King this way.
May God bless you,
Rene Vaplus(Yes, Private N'Pneu, this means we'll see each other more often now...)
JaQ makes GdS a suggestion
Dear major Gaston,I somehow doubt that you are as spineless as your regimental brothers. You must have been at least running away from the enemy in uppright position instead of crawling through the mud like most Marines, otherwise your nobody could have noticed you and mentioned you in dispatches.
Therefore I waste some ink on making you this honourable suggestion. We have matters to discuss over the tip of my blade but since most real gentlemen finds your vile stench objectionable I have to stand in line. Since I doubt there are many swordsmen in Paris besides me who can arise triumphantly from three duels in a row I fear I might not get the satisfaction of showing you the propper way of handling a sword. To solve this I suggest that we duel to first blood as that will enable us to settle our differences without me gaining an unfair advantage.
Sincerely - Baron Julien a'Quse, Major of the Crown Prince Cuirassiers
Re: Poor N'Pneu...
My Dear Msr Vin Plus,I regret that a small miscalculation on my part left me defending my honour with a flimsy tool that was no match for your impressive weapon but circumspection was the order of the day and I live to face you again. In fact, I look forward to it.
Yours,
Michel N'Pneu,
Private, the Cardinal's Guard
Re: JaQ makes GdS a suggestion
My dear Baron Charlatan,Your crude threats and petty insults are pathetic and no doub motivated by jealousy of my success and an awareness of your own shortcomings. You are just the sort of officer I have come to despise - faster with your mouth than your blade and only interested in playing the bully and beating up those smaller than yourself.
Let us see whether you can take the brunt of cutlass without blubbing!
Gaston
JAD to MLC
Michel,I wonder if perhaps, you could do without the company of your fair Cheri over the next couple of months. Not the full span of time, but a couple of weeks this month to rehearse a play and then the following month for the production. My own Fanny will also be in the play. I'm sure she will do me proud just as Cheri will make you proud.
Dijon
To MLC
FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUESMy Son,
As the great theologian Bishop Woodhouse has so often said at mass, the role of the church is to 'praise and correct'. I find you a fine young man of Paris, but sadly naive to the powers of darkness around us. The eve of All Saints day is no time for good Christians to be reveling.
Perhaps it is coincidence that your party perchance fell upon that eve, and that your guests perchance dressed in fantastic costumes, and that a over-enthusiastic host of pious parishioners perchance arrived upon your doorstep. More likely it is the Lord's plan. I for one have learned to urge action more gently in troubled times. I hope you have learned the Halloween, as they have come to call it, is not for good Christians such as yourself.
I gratefully accept your invitation to attend a gathering at your mansion this month. I hope that you have some works of a pious nature that you can share. You may send a coach to the cathedral at dusk.
As a final note, I found your tone less than penitent, I expect you will avail yourself of the confessional this month.
Go with God,
Frere Jacques
To Pastor 'Stinky' de Villain
FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUESDear Pastor de Villain,
Your letter came up at the Cardinal's meeting. More than one voice suggested that being put to the question might show you the error of your wayward comments. However, when I regaled the Cardinal with tales of Roger 'Stinky' de Villain's zany capers in seminary he became so overcome with giggling that a host came out of his nose. I managed to convince them that this was merely another of your pranks, if in poor taste.
For my own part, I know not whether the spirits that possess you come from the nether realm or the sacramental cellar. Regardless, I don't know if I can keep you from an ecclesiastic inquiry next time.
Go with God,
Frere Jacques
to KFC Buquet
FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUESDear Minister Buquet,
I received with great interest your inquiries into the Widows and Orphans fund. It IS amazing that we have been able to throw such lavish parties and maintain such a luxurious mansion without neglecting the needs of these pitiful waifs!
I would like to bring these mercies to all of Paris' unfortunates. What say you to a new ministry, Minister of Charitable Acts?
Go with God,
Frere Jacques
