Carol Sings Along to a New Tune

The current trend of mistresses being stolen away under the noses of their long-term lovers continues as Gaston de Sancerre this month sweet-talked Carol Singer while Raymond de Wayne was busy catching up on his theological studies. Gaston and Raymond exchanged choice words at the two main parties towards the end of October and both found time to take lessons with their regimental weapons in preparation for a more protracted 'discussion' to come. Indeed, Major de Sancerre looks like having a rather full dance card as he also made appointments to meet two of his regimental enemies from the Crown Prince Cuirassiers. One of these same Cuirassiers, Julien ā Quse, had already easily dealt with Gordon Zola after losing Ruby to the Guards Brigade Major. Zola skillfully evaded Julien's initial attacking moves and struck twice himself, before he succumbed to a powerful cut. Julien went on to celebrate with his old flame Di Version throughout the night with the pair being seen at the LaCroix party dressed up as cuddly bunnies. Meanwhile, Michel N'Pneu failed to gain satisfaction from Rene Vaplus after the latter had stolen away Eva Ready. This encounter was something of a mismatch with a foil-wielding Michel looking ill equipped to deal with his opponent's zweihander. After quipping that Rene must be making up for deficiencies elsewhere by using such a long weapon, Michel surprisingly struck home with a quick lunge. Rene seemed largely unaffected, despite his serious injuries from last month, and proceeded to inflict two deep wounds encouraging Michel to wisely offer his surrender as a third would surely have led to his demise.

Who's Who

Military Matters

The attraction of a position in the Cardinal's Guard seems as strong as ever with Michel N'Pneu being the latest recruit, though he may have been a touch surprised to find himself leaving for the frontier with Lt Colonel Ferrailleur's battalion within hours of signing on. Francois found time amid his deployment preparations to defeat Baron Brisbois in a regimental duel. The Colonel of the king's Musketeers managed to put up a bit of a fight, scratching his opponent a couple of times before conceding and disappearing to Brittany in his Governor's hat to attend to provincial matters there (or perhaps indulge in some much needed bed rest).

Having left the army, Rene Vaplus perversely spent three weeks at the Military Academy, apparently telling his instructor something about wanting to take things in his own hands and needing to learn how. Major O'Reilly will be pleased to hear that contrary to the report in last month's Gazette he will not be facing court martial charges as the missing paperwork has been uncovered in Inspector General Michel Jambon's office.

Costume Drama

The most colorful social gathering of October was Michel LaCroix' costume party held at his mansion. The host and Cheri, dressed as Tuaregs (a people Michel had encountered on his voyage to Africa), greeted their guests while flanked by full size replicas of camels. The costumes ranged from the standard but safe variety to the highly imaginative. Rene Vaplus went as an outlaw and initially caused some alarm as some of the guests thought he was the real thing. He appeard unshaven, sporting a sleezy looking hat with a feather and a mask, looking like a highwayman, armed with his blade and a mean looking collection of pistols and daggers. Eva, wearing an old dress ripped apart at some slightly delicate places, and bound, played his prisoner. While most of the guests opted for themes which were quite evident, Queue de Cheval went for a more obscure style clad in the once fashionable black (last year's brown and the new gray). In black silk from head to foot, with a silver moon belt buckle and mid-length black cloak, decorated with small sliver stars, Queue's face was hidden behind a black mask, rimmed in silver, with a star-shaped clasp holding his long pony-tail in place.

Brimstone and Treacle

Absent from Michel's party was Bishop Frere Jacques who was giving a sermon criticising Chevalier LaCroix for encouraging Halloween blasphemy. The ordinarily calm parishioners and minor priests attending went on a rampage. Before Jacques even finished his masterpiece of fire and brimstone "Everybody Scourge Some Pagans", church goers poured into the streets, pummeling Halloween celebrants mercilessly and stealing their candy. They were finally dispersed by the guard outside LaCoix' mansion just as they began pelting the party goers with flaming pumpkins. Asked for comment, the Cardinal exclaimed "Pagans?! Sic' em boys!"

Around and About

Perhaps Frere Jacques was feeling less than charitable after his many guests at the Feast of St Luke came up short on charitable donations for the Widows and Orphans, though their shortcomings were not left unmentioned. Paris' favourite Bishop had also been at the Fleur at the start of the month, hanging about the entrance to the main reception room where the Royal Address to the Royal Academy was taking place. The heavy oak doors would have prevented him finding out 'what all the fuss was about' though Michel Grognard, Henri du Orleans and Jacques Armand Dijon were all in the know.

Commissioner of Public Safety Jean de Florette seems intent on being tough on corruption and the causes of corruption as he again brought charges of alleged bribery, this time concerning Anton St Vierre. Anton's trial will be held in the first week of November despite concerned friends' warnings that this is doing nothing for his still dubious health.

Finally, business was good this month for the fencing schools. Gordon Zola and Chicot d'Armagnac practised with their regimental weapons at Le Tigre, while Julien ā Quse, Beau Taille and Anton St Vierre all trained with the sabre at Le Chat when there were no parties to grab their attention. The sabre was also the weapon of choice for Dragoon Guards Le Petomane and William des Grandes-Portes who were spotted throughout most of October at Le Souris and Le Chien, respectively.

At the moment all mail is being forwarded to the Yahoo account so please don't copy messages to both addresses.

ASV's Trial - Will take place in the first week of November and is a weekly action for ASV and any witnesses who wish to give evidence.

Duel Guide - Some of you are not using conditionals in your duel orders which limits the chance of a victory. Check the beginner's duelling guide at the website for advice, especially if you play in another EG game as the rules are slightly different. You can always supply extra orders to apply if your or your opponent's weapon breaks.

Orders - Please remember to put your character initials and the game month in the subject header for your orders. Also, please try to avoid waiting for the last minute to submit orders if possible as it will minimise any delays due to queries over orders and chasing people up. Thanks.

Apologies

Baron a'Quse,

Since I now left the Marines, I see no need to bother you any further. Please accept my apologies for insulting you.

God bless you,
Rene Vaplus

Lt Colonel Lassan and the Royal Marines

Lt Colonel Lassan and the Royal Marines,

You are a real disappointment to me. I started my career in the Royal Marines thinking they were a tough unit, the first ashore, the last aboard, and all that. And what is true? They are a bunch of losers. I try to beat Major a'Quse from the CPC and my comrades do not even manage to get me a second. I wage a bet with Beau Taille from the CPC and my nice superior tries to send me to the front to make me lose it. You, Lt Colonel Lassan, write letters to your regimental enemy begging that he doesn't hit you that hard ("we are all needed at the front" and all that crap, remember?). Speaking of the front - we were "in the thick of action, as usual". But what came of it? An inconclusive battle result. Great! To cut it short, I hereby declare my resignation from the Royal Marines. Hopefully there will be regiments with better performance. Ah, by the way: I met your wife and she says bonsoir.

Rene Vaplus

From RdV

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. I was merely in seclusion, seeking spiritual guidance from God when rumours of foul wrongdoing reached my ear. It would appear that someone has been taking my name in vain - one of the cardinal sins! I can understand why this misguided individual envies my life of simple purity and has sought to emulate or even appropriate my identity but it is clearly wrong. Why, this unknown has passed off his words as my own and even dared to lay hands on that 'lady' which Le Petomane calls his own. Naturally, Le Petomane is outspoken with condemnation but he should know better than to believe such foul slurs. His impetuous words are clearly those of a man so angered as to be unable to see the plain truth if it hit him in the face!

I have not yet decided whether to teach him a damned good lesson for his arrogance and mistrust by cutting him into little pieces or whether I should emulate our good Lord and turn the other cheek. It would seem that the foul poisons that Frere Jacques has been spreading have turned him against me. Why, that man is no more fit to be Bishop than the meanest Hapsburg dog!

But now I must away for this Villain has bigger fish to fry..

Father de Villain

To RdV

Dear Cur,

You seem to hurl insults nearly as fast as Chevalier La Petomane's lady cast you out on the street! Bring a friend (if you have any) to your duel, I believe this shall be most entertaining.

ASV

Feast

FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUES

God Fearing Citizen's of Paris:

"And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink."
Genesis 26:30

October is a frightful time for the faithful with the godless celebration of Halloween. Fear not! We will sanctify ourselves week 3 with a celebration of the Feast of St. Luke! After a celebration of God's glory we will be ready for a sermon "Everybody scourge some pagans" week 4!

Go with God,

Frere Jacques

Ah Paris!

With wide eyed admiration Jean takes in the wonders of Paris! The sounds, sights, and smells that his father spoke of when he told of his younger days. The wine is strong, adventure awaits, and Mon Dieu! The women are beautiful! Smiling he makes his way into the city. Now here is a city where a man can fulfill his dreams. "Ah Paris! My sword is sharp. My heart is strong. And I am sure the women await my charms!" Anxiously he winds his way through the crowded streets. Truly this is the place for a gentleman to meet his destiny!

Jean Claude du Lac has arrived

Ah Paris! - a Reply

Be careful... not everything is as it would seem in our days and under a shiny surface there is often something rotten and foul. Better trust noone and keep your blade at hand, young friend.

Rene Vaplus

A Question

An open letter to Paris:

As a young man looking to improve my position, could I impose on you of Gentle Birth to help give direction to myself. I find myself overwhelmed by the opportunities here. Alas could you perhaps grace me with the pearls of your wisdom and tell me where I should turn my heart and my sword to make my fortune!

Jean Claude du Lac

An Answer

Cher Jean Claude du Lac!

Here's some advice: Whatever you do, don't join the Marines. Trust me, I know what I mean.

René Vaplus

Marines

M. Valpus

I thank you for your advice. Although the allure of the sea is mighty I must admit that the Sabre wieghs better in my hand than the cutlass. Perhaps we may meet next month that we may lift a glass and know each other better.

I am humbly yours,
Jean Claude du Lac

Winner of my costume party

Thank you all, who had attended my Late October party. If all had the fun I did, I'm sure that it will be a night to remember.

As for the costume award, I've had great difficulty in choosing a winner. The costumes were quite splendid or funny. It made a decision quite hard. To be fair, I am afraid that MLC and JAD had to be disqualified from the competition, as they are my dear friends. To award them the prize would have seemed inappropriate. I promise, friends, I will make it up to you.

M. BT, for you and Alison's interesting costumes, I shall award you two the prize of 100cr. I shall have the money delivered to you shortly. Thank you all again. Perhaps this costume ball can become a more regular event at my home!

As always, MLC

Ah Paris!

M. Valpus

You make this wonderful city seem devious monsieur! How can a city with such wonderous sights and beautiful women be a threat. Do not we all serve the same king and have the same enemies?

Jean Claude

Ah Paris!

Cher Jean Claude,

Give God that you're right with your last assumption. But do never underestimate the potential danger a beautiful woman can pose! But well, you have to excuse me. You are a hopeful newcomer with everything ahead of yourself and will probably make your way in Paris, and I just went through quite some distress and am now left with nothing more than my blade to count on. At least that is, as Michel N'Pneu will be happy to attest, something.

I hope we'll meet on the finest available party this month. This will be the only social gathering I can attend to, because I have to finish my studies at the Military Academy. Then it's off to the front on a quest for someone called "Shylock".

God bless you,
Rene Vaplus

Ah Paris!

You speak strangely monsieur. But you are correct that I am young and do have my like ahead of me. Perhaps we shall meet but if we do now I wish you luck on your quest.

Most sincerely,
J.C. du Lac
