On 5/1/97, an
illegal Nintendo 64
copying device, the "N64
Doctor," with an optional
MPEG Player, was
released in Hong Kong.
This device is a CD
storage unit that comes
with a large memory
capacity which, like 16-bit
copying devices, has
upgradable memory slots.
The N64 Doctor also
contains an RS232C Port
and can connect to floppy
drives, PCs, and the
rewritable CD-ROM
attachment. The MPEG
module is optional and has
a very high frame
playback when used in
conjuction with the N64
(in Asia, devices with MPEG adapters are very
popular). The manufacturers of the N64 Doctor
will be implimenting an Online service later to help
with trouble-shooting and other resources.
It will be interesting to see how Nintendo reacts to
this new, illegal threat, which the company has
attacked with many years of endeavoring in
lawsuits in the past.
The current price for one of these devices is about
$400.
