An Essay I Wrote
PotaTo GuNs
Just think, you are holding an eight foot piece of abs pipe in your hands. You flick a small metal sparker and with an earsplitting whomp! a potato goes flying at one forth the speed of sound. Sound cool? Than keep reading. Yes a device like this does exist, it's called a potato gun. I own many potato guns. If you own one or just interested in them then keep reading. You will need to know, what to use to fire (propellant), what to fire and, where to fire. Potato guns rule.

There is no doubt in my mind that there is a best propellant. The best propellant is ether alcohol. It is found in starting fluid. It must be used in small amounts and used carefully. Starting fluid can be sprayed into the chamber (place where the sparker fits into) in very small amounts. When judging how much propellant to use potato gunners measure seconds of aerosol. Starting fluid is one fourth second. Other propellants include, propane, butane, actreline(for the insane only, it burns at 6000 degrees C. and is very loud) hair spray, and spray deodorant. Once again it is my belief that starting fluid is the best propellant.

A common potato gunner question is "what do I fire?". To this my reply is potatoes are the best. They seal well witch is very important since the gun fires on air pressure. Potatoes aren't the only thing to fire though, you can fire many things. Grapefruit are very funny they splat all over the place. Frozen grapefruit are scary since rather than splat the make a lot of noise and scrapnil when they hit something. Bouncy balls are great fun because you can fire them at a wall and they bounce back at you very fast. You can fire just about anything that will seal into the barrel. Potatoes fire the best.

A problem facing potato gunners is where to fire their potato guns. They can fire very far so firing them in your back yard is dangerous. You can't fire them in state or national parks because of the danger of hitting someone. So you must think about where to fire them. Any empty large wide open spot will work. That is where you should fire them.

In this essay you have learned about potato guns. You have learned about where to fire them, what to fire, and what propellant to use. Remember fire potatoes, use starting fluid to fire them, and fire your potato gun in wide open spots. Safety is important, so don't use actrilene. Don't fire your potato gun at people. The most important thing to do with a potato gun is to have fun.

My friend and I are working on a potato gun that is fully automatic!!!!
