..SOJOURN MUD..

"MUD", in computing internet terminology stands for "Multi User Dimension" or "Multi User Directory" or "Multi User Dungeon". They allow multiple users, from all around the world via the internet, to connect to a certain site and interact together with lines of text. It is sort of the basis for most internet chat lines, and there are a *lot* of different types of MUDs.

Sojourn MUD is a Fantasy Role-Playing Game-based MUD, originally a DikuMUD, which is now heavily modified. It is thus a TEXT-BASED game (note: there are NO pictures or graphics in it) which many players can access internationally at once. There are lots of RPG DikuMUDs as well, but Sojourn (for a time called Toril) is by *far* the best I have seen in several years of checking out various similar MUDs.

Based on various Forgotten Realms fantasy books, especially 9 *VERY* commendable books by R. A. Salvatore ("Sojourn", "Exile & "Homeland" are the first 3), the MUD is set in the Forgotten Realms imaginary world which includes such inhabitants as Gnomes, Swamp Trolls, Grey Elves, Illithids, Halflings, Barbarians, Ogres as well as Humans and many varied wild and wierd monsters. The idea of the game as a player is to create your character which has a certain race and class, and then go out into the "world" and Hunt and Kill monsters (NPC's or "Mobs").

There is a lot of scope in the game for much personal interaction, chatting, etc. with other people. It's great to make new friends and learn about what they do and thier lives wherever they may be, often in some part of the world you have never been to or may have never even heard of! For me, the major aspect which draws me to Sojourn's realms is the HUNTing of lots of different mobs with groups of people unknown and friends alike. Role-Playing is encouraged, is somewhat challenging to do successfully within the game, and a lot of fun.

My 2 main characters are Ssarathan - a Human Druid, and Vandz - a Human Paladin. Poor Old Ssarathan only ever made it to level 43 (of 50 max), and has been around a long time. Vandz made it to level 46, and being of the (Holy) Warrior class was most able to smite mightily many vile evil monsters that roam the realms. Here is Vandz's latest full battle equipment list:

This set of equipment, overall, is average for a high level Warrior type. It did enable Vandz the Paladin to be quite effective in most situations; however a fair few more better, rarer items were needed to help him survive most Hunts more consitently and also to be regarded as a Mighty Holy Warrior. The Paladin class is a great class - Paladins have various special skills and benefits, offset with various disadvantages and restrictions. Equipped with some of the best equipment in the game, the Paladin can become a truly masterful and *most* dangerous and potent hitter.

Sojourn MUD, for the last few years known as Toril MUD, was recently in a new stage of Beta Testing. The new year has brought with it the reopening of the MUD, having it's code undergoing various alterations & refinements with lots of fun new aspects. We are *very* much looking forward to the new era of the Realms of Sojourn...

I have mainly played Mogr, a Barbarian Warrior, which is my main character now. I do love the warrior class, having never played one before Mogr. He is level 48.3 as of 13th sept 1999, and still growing. He has a bit better eq than Vandz did, as listed above, but still not awesome. I cant wait to get him over level 50 - my first char EVER to reach that :P Other chars I have are Vlor - lvl 13 Human Assassin, Mogrok - lvl 17 Troll Warrior, and Dooblegobb - lvl 8 Gnome Conjurer. I plan to make a Barbarian Shaman soon, which will mainly be an exploration char once i get him to lvl 17.
