Angband... what is it? Well, if you've read the book
The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien, Angband was the inescapable dungeon in
which Morgoth resided. This freeware game is the Tolkien fan's paradise,
with all the characters of his multiple books (except for the good guys,
alas. Not that I'd want to kill 'em) and many of the treasures. The idea
of the game is to charge down from town level with your character, and
kill morgoth on dungeon level 100. It has a very Dungeons and Dragons feeling
to it, with hit points, dexterity, stamina, acid resistant amulets, etc.
The downside of this game is it has no easy interface; you will literally
use the whole keyboard. For instance, to drink a potion in your inventory,
you type 'q' for quaff, then select the potion. Attacking, however, is
as simple as equipping a weapon (with 'w' for wield) and moving into an
enemy (with the number pad on the right). If the weapon is, say, a dagger
that does damage 1d6, you'll be able to hit with damage anywhere between
1 and 6, subtracting that much from an enemies HP (if they have no armor
class). If your weapon was, for instance, an executioner's sword (4d5)
you would be able to hit anywhere between 4 and 20. However, you'd have
to be quite strong to wield such a weapon. Well, on to the downloads:
