Irish Collector Societies

The following societies appear to be active in Ireland, but I have no details at present. Any information that you, gentle reader, can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Cork Philatelic Society

MidWestern Philatelic Society

Sligo Philatelic Society

Federation of Irish Philatelic Societies

A recent publication of interest to Irish collectors is Joe Foley's "The Rare Coil". He brings together several articles and correspondence and documents from the archives of the Irish Post Office, pertaining to the 2d vertical coil issued in 1935.

Published by the author, $12.00 U.S., P.O.Box 183, Riva, Maryland 21140

Another publication of interest to Irish collectors is Irish Airmail 1919-1990 by Bill Murphy.

First Edition
Published jointly by the Irish Airmail Society and Éire Philatelic Association
June 1996 8.5" x 11" 96 pages
Bill has taken more than eight years to assemble the information contained in this fine reference work. It covers all known mail-carrying flights to and from Ireland since the first successful non-stop trans-Atlantic flight of Alcock and Brown in 1919.

Each listing gives a brief description of the flight or series of flights. Included in this description is the date of the flight, the itinerary, the airline making the flight and other pertinent information. A 50% reduced illustration is provided for most flights and the different collectable covers from the flight are enumerated as well as the number of covers flown where known.

While an exhaustive treatment is not attempted for each and every flight it is expected that individual collectors will persue a more detailed study of flights they are interested in.
