The strange rivalry between me and the creator of Freïn

Since I met François Coupal in 1996, we became good friends and rivals in terms of Game Mastering.   We both loved and played role playing games for a long time.   In our little group of friends me and François were the only ones willing and passionate enough to make our friends play to our RPG creations.   I created my own game systems and he did the same.

We "rivaled" each other and I guess we secretly always tried to make a better and more fun game engine than the other.   Unfortunately, he always made better quests than me.   He always was better prepared, not misplacing any ideas or events during the game or forgetting some important facts or details like I did (hehehe).   He always made nicer character's sheet than me, got better ambiance music and mostly, his story lines were ALWAYS far cooler and more original than mines... Doh!  Hum I guess if there could be a point where I was probably better then Frank was for creating logical and very realistic rule systems.   To be perfectly honest, I always was the one who got inspired by HIS quests.   Very often he created something and I then created something similar.   I guess I kept myself in challenge all the time, trying to be better than him but never succeeded so far.   I honestly can admit that I truly admire Frank for his great creativity.   Everybody believe that I have a wild and incredibly fertile imagination, but Frank, oh my god... He's twice the GM that I am!   Everytime he creates something, it's new, innovative and breath-takingly professional and original.   I have to thank him because he initiated me to many game systems that now enabled me to become more open minded and creative.   Also I have to thank him because this constant challenge feeling kept me going and going, working so hard that I improved very much (but I got addicted to Game Mastering and I now have insomnia very often because im excited when im working too much on my quests.)

Me and François may rivals but still, we are very good friends and we respect each other's skill for Game Mastering.   We are always very proud to talk to the other about a recent creation and the other always try to help giving tips to the other.   Ha well, at least im able to admit defeat.   He his and will probably always be a better GM than me.   But beware Frank my friend, now that I have a computer and a Web page, I have made quite impressive progress and one day I shall rule has the ultimate GM!!! * Very evil laughter * Mwahahahahahahaaa...   HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! ... haha... ha... huh.. sorry about that... hehehe...

Freïn, an awesome game system created by a friend of mine

Okay, now that I have bothered you enough about my personal life, I shall now talk about my friend Frank's Game System he calls: Freïn, the Wanderer's Saga.   Hum, now that I think of it, I wonder if Freïn is not a derive of his own name, Frank.   Anyway...

One day, François decided to create a game system that would be totally different to what he saw, played or read about, so he started to think very hard.   He then clicked about the global idea of the project; the players would live in a world where the planet they are on would want to destroy them!   Freïn, the planet's name, is supposedly a giant living organism, cunning and intelligent, seeking to destroy the parasites living on him.   It's a strange concept at first, but it's very interesting and original too.   Don't get confused however, Freïn's landscape don't really look like a giant organism but more like the "normal" landscape we are use to.   Thus, the mountains would be Freïn's hard skin regions and nails, lakes would be open wounds that take centuries to heal (Freïn's blood is transparent and is pretty much like the ordinary water we drink) while marsh and swamps would probably be infected wounds, with lot's of horrible pimples filled with pus (disgusting).   Anyway, Freïn has it's ways of slowly getting rid of it's parasites, one of thoses way is to spawn creatures.   The concept of the game is to play a Wanderer, a humanoid race, very much like us, and to live to prosper on Freïn.   I guess Frank will make us fight against Freïn or something... hehehe...

Well, anyway, I won't elaborate very much on the topic because Frank created a whole site about it but if your interested in checking it out, here's the Link to the official Freïn Site.

About Clydde the Detta

I had the honor of playing this great game.   Well actually I just recently joined the game but it officially started only about a month ago so I didn't miss anything big I guess.   I played only once but imidiately felled in love with the whole game concept.   Personnaly I think that the Edged System employed has a rule system for Freïn is a little hard to learn but I guess I'll get used to it.   Like I previously mentionned, I love the concept of the Wanderers and I love the character I created.   Actually im the only one on the 7 or 8 player in total, to love his character enough to write a whole document talking about his background, concepts, ideals and goals.   Clydde is soo cool that I will soon write some short stories about him and his adventures.

Anyway, in resume, Clydde is part of the only clan on Freïn that use advance technology (the Detta), a very rare thing since magic in this world is more than extremely common.   The young Detta is a master in engineering and is totally obsessed with all mechanical things, always trying to invent a gadget or to improve something else.   Beside is uncommonly logical and scientific mind, he's a total goof-off and a complete pervert.   He's very fun to play and I almost felt bad during the game sessions because I kept telling jokes, cruising the female party members in a very pervert way and we laughed and laughed so much that I was probably breaking into pieces the serious of the game... hehehe... Poor Frank, he had and will continue to endure Clydde's sense of humour for a little while.
Anyway, Clydde is to me, an original and fun character to play.   I can't wait for the other Freïn's sessions...
