The Russian Northern Fleet - Sources of Radioactive ContaminationIt's the middle of winter, snowing and freezing outside. Can you imagine 60,000 to 100,000 Americans turning out for a peaceful demonstration in front of the White House during a reception for Russian President Borris Yeltsin to protest the impresionment of a Russian ex-Navy captain? No, not very likely. But it happened in Oslo last winter when Yeltsin made his first state visit to Norway. The Norwegians were upset that the Russians had put a former Navy captain in prison without due prcess of law and had indicated he would be tried, in camera, as traitor. His treason? He had revealed to the world, and the Norwegians in particular, the true state of the Russian's Northern Fleet, one that was slowly falling apart from lack of maintenance. Scores of Russian nuclear-powered subs were sitting, essentially abandoned, at Russian naval bases in northern Russia, just miles from Norwegian territory. Their nuclear reactors, never the best, were nuclear accidents waiting to happen. Needless to say, the Norwegians were a bit upset. And so they marched. This site tells why. Keep an eye on it. It's a problem that isn't going to go away.I know.
