DIPLOMACY NEWS SOURCESOne of the things the Web does best is pass on the latest news. You just get better, in depth coverage of more news from more places from more perspectives. One simple stat says it all: for every news camera out there looking for a story there are fifty wire service stringers digging for one. but some stories just lend themselves to the video camera and that is why CNN and CSPAN are so great.1. AP On the Globe Online:World WireThere are a lot of ways to access AP and Reuters on the Web. This is as good as any. I try to check it at least twice a day. There is a difference between AP and Reuters although not so great a one as in times past. The average news reader won't notice it. There is also a small, perhaps 5% difference in the stories they cover. They're both good for today's news. AP is better for tomorrow's and Reuters is better for yesterday's.2. CNN - World NewsIt's usually superficial, but sometimes it does some really great stuff. Their coverage of the recent UK election and the Zaire fiasco has been very good. Most of the big stories usually have additional sources you can link on. Useful if you are lazy or in a hurry.3. Drudge ReportA horrible name and the guy's editorial opinions stink, but a great way to connect with all kinds of excellent international news sources. And a bonus, you don't have to fill up your Bookmarks with them.4. Timely News Search ResultsI think this is the most valuable part of the search engines' news services. You can set up a specific search on a specific subject and run it periodically. I have about 20 of them up and running at any given moment: countries, organizations, events, and people. Once a week I zip through them and download and print the ones I want to keep.5. Yahoo News SearchSame idea, different provider. I've been using Yahoo and Alta Vista for this for over a year. I've got over 2000 articles on France, for instance, that I've culled off this service. Sure, most of it's junk, but some of it is great stuff to blow away the French players at Cons with. They hate it when you know more about their country than they do!6. The Tocqueville ConnectionI like this site a lot. It is very well done and yet easy enough to read that I can imagine myself doing something like this, if I had the time and money. It is a good source of news about France and the French designed for Ami readers. I even send in an occasional blurb on women Dippers & diplomats; which usually gets a response from some male chauvinist pig!7. Agenzia AnsaThis is an Italian web site devoted to Italian news. Soccer is the subject of choice. A close second is sex scandals in Italian politics. They were spending a lot of time and space on the Italian forces serving as part of the peacekeeping forces in Bosnia until their navy's flagship went aground off the coast of Croatia.
