Laying Out Your Castle

If you play Skaven you can have all sorts of fun with your castle layout.  The most important part is proper placing of your Warpfire throwers.  What I do is put two square blocks on either side of the gate, inside them I put my Warpfire throwers.  The blocks have windows which are angled so that the Warpfire throwers can nail the unit charging the gate without hitting each other.  On top of the blocks you can put globebaidersm, gutterrunners, or slaves with rocks.  Next right after the gate way have the wall pinch inward so that the unit will have to move through at 3 abreast in order to get through.  Place unit of choose on the other side and let the massacre begin.  Over the courtyard have several catwalks that enable globebaiders to kill from above.   When placing cat walks make share there extremely difficult to get to the last thing you need is having your globeaiders massacred.

To moat or not to moat that is the question on the up side you can really nail the enemy units with the Warpfire throwers and it deters ladders.  On the down side they get more troops which is bad very bad depending on how they want to spend the extra points.  Me I don't know because I don't feel like making a moat for the time being, and we don't play to many siege games in general.   If you have any ideas about thins e-mail me.

Make shure that the Warpfire throwers have access to the courtyards from the blocks and to the catwalks.  A little house rule that we use is that when a warp fire thrower is firing down use the circular template like when your using a pot of boiling oil.  This is only when firing directly down.

A neat trick you can do with doomwheels is to hide one in the walls of the castle and at some convenient time have it realized into the fray.  It helps if you have a real Skaven castle when pulling this little stunt because really a Skaven castle is nothing but an old castle with tunnels and secrets all though out its structure.  That way you have an excuse for pushing a doomwheel out of the wall and into some unfortunate regiment.  Of course just to make it fare you might want to make it take a terrain test of have the wall weakened but both players can take care of this when the time arrives.  Just be share to remind the other player that this is the sort of tactics any Skaven general would use in order to win.  Also in this little cubby hole you might want to place some globebaiders just to discourage any attacks against the wall.  This could also be very useful for when it is required that you sally forth and destroy some war machines.

Troop Selection

Gutter runners bells  and plague monks are pretty much out for defense.  What you want is a large unit of StormVermin 2 large units of Clanrats bunch of globebaiders at east two Warpfire throwers and lots of slaves.   Only put the slaves on the wall and give them all rocks.  Put globebaiders on the blocks so that when the gates are being charged there is a whole bunch of the death from above thing.  The walls will stay pretty much undefended which either means there going to attack the gates and suffer horrible casualties or they'll waste valuable time trying to bash down the walls either way you should have enough time to be prepared to meet there assault when the time comes.  Lastly but most importantly you'll be needing the crown of command and the Sacred Standard of the Horned Rat.   Lastly a Grey Seer is most useful for getting rid of those archers and warmachies remember these two things are very very dangerous. Also in the troop selection process you might want to take advantage of the services provided by mercenaries.  A unit of pikemen could be very useful when the gates eventually crash down or if your really unlucky a piece of wall.
