Before we mess with Tribes settings, let's look at some windows settings. These will not only help you with gaming, but general internet as well.
The first thing we do is set our computer to act as a network server. This does not mean you will be a network server, but it allows your computer to do more thinking than normal. Without getting technical, it means more room for internet packets to get through to you while playing ....
1 right click on my computer
2 select properties from the drop down menu
3 select the performance tab - here is a picture of what you should see
4 click on the file system button
5 select network server from the drop down list - here is a picture...
6 click the ok button
While we are still in the performance tab of the system properties, we will do another tweak
7 click on the virtual memory button - we are going to tell windows that we want the virtual memory to be one size. This keeps windows from resizing the swap file all the time. It should make Tribes run a little smoother and prevent your hard drive from becoming fragmented too quickly.
8 set your virtual memory to be 2 to 3 times the amount of memory you have in the computer. I have 64 mb of memory, so I set mine to 180 mb. It can be any size you want, but know this, Tribes needs at least 100 mb of virtual memory. Set both the min and max to the same number. This is how we keep the swap file the same size. Here is a picture of my settings.
When you click the ok button, window will pop up an alert warning against messing with virtual settings, ignore it. If you have Win98, it may look different, email me if you can't figure it out. I have windows 98 on another machine and will look it up for you.
Windows will want to reboot the complete the settings, go ahead and do that, then come back.
Welcome back !
