I am here to help... Took me a while to figure this out but it was worth it... First,

make your skin (Hopefully you are using Photoshop 4 or 5)

After you have made it an 8-bit image and you have it ready to go, go into

explorer and make sure that your 8-bit image is in the same folder as your

extracted skintools stuff, follow me?

Here is the dos part...Open a dos window and get to the dir. where your 8-bit

image is and your makeskin stuff...here is the line you need to type..

makeskin pal3 rwg_light_armor.bmp rwg.larmor.bmp

rwg_light_armor.bmp is MY 8-bit .bmp file, the file that I made in PS5. Replace this

part with the name of YOUR file you saved...RWG is just my clan designation, yours

will be different.

(rwg.larmor.bmp) is the output to make it your skin. Tribes will recognize this as

the light skin because you used larmor in that line. REMEMBER, it is IMPORTANT

that when you run makeskin, that the first part (The letters before the first dot)

be the same for all your makeskin outputs... example:

Here is what the input looked like BEFORE I messed with the makeskin program.

rwg_light_armor.psd

rwg_medium_armor.psd

rwg_heavy_armor.psd

rwg_lfemale_armor.psd

rwg_mfemale_armor.psd

(These are my 5 photoshop files, .psd is the Photoshop extension)

I then converted them all to 8-bit .bmp's using indexed custom color, and then

resized them to 256 x 256. I then saved them as a .bmp. To do this, instead of

clicking "save as", click "save a copy" and then you can select to save it as a .bmp

file. If you click "save as" you won't be able to save it as a .bmp. After all that is

done for all of the 5 skins that you have modified, copy them to a folder that has

your makesin program. Then I run the makeskin in a dos window and this is what

the output should look like.

These are the 5 files I copied into the folder where I have the makeskin files

rwg_light_armor.bmp

rwg_medium_armor.bmp

rwg_heavy_armor.bmp

rwg_lfemale_armor.bmp

rwg_mfemale_armor.bmp

The only difference between these 5 files and the 5 .psd files listed above is that

these 5 files are 8-bit and resized to 256 x 256.

There is no heavy female, Tribes uses the heavy male skin model for this.

To get the output for the light armor, I did this....

makeskin pal3 rwg_light_armor.bmp rwg.larmor.bmp

(This takes MY 8-bit .bmp (rwg_light_armor.bmp) file and converts it to a Tribes

ready file)

Do this for all the 5 skins....This is what I did...

makeskin pal3 rwg_light_armor.bmp rwg.larmor.bmp

makeskin pal3 rwg_medium_armor.bmp rwg.marmor.bmp

makeskin pal3 rwg_heavy_armor.bmp rwg.harmor.bmp

makeskin pal3 rwg_lfemale_armor.bmp rwg.lfemale.bmp

makeskin pal3 rwg_mfemale_armor.bmp rwg.mfemale.bmp

These are the 5 files you should have AFTER running the makeskin program on all 5

of your 8-bit .bmp files...

rwg.larmor.bmp (your light skin)

rwg.marmor.bmp (your medium skin)

rwg.harmor.bmp (your heavy skin)

rwg.lfemale.bmp (your light female skin)

rwg.mfemale.bmp (your medium female skin)

Now you should have 5 files ready to put into the .vol that goes in

tribes\base\skins.

Here is what you type next.

vt -sp rwg.vol rwg.larmor.bmp

(vt -sp) This is the function to put the file in a vol.

(rwg.vol) This is the name of MY .vol file

(rwg.larmor.bmp) This is MY light armor skin after I ran it through the makeskin

program.

Do this with all your skins, all 5 of them, you should have done this...

vt -sp rwg.vol rwg.larmor.bmp

vt -sp rwg.vol rwg.marmor.bmp

vt -sp rwg.vol rwg.harmor.bmp

vt -sp rwg.vol rwg.lfemale.bmp

vt -sp rwg.vol rwg.mfemale.bmp

You now have a .vol file that should be 320k in size. This goes in Tribes\base\skins

and select it in the game where you choose your name. You will need to host your

own game to see it though. But before you do that, You'll need to edit

ServerPrefs.cs. This file is found in Tribes\config.

FIND THIS LINE and edit it so that the name of your .vol file is between the

quotes.

This is what is looks like before you edit the line...

$Server::teamSkin0 = "beagle";

Edit this line so it now looks like this...

$Server::teamSkin0 = "rwg";

rwg is the name of MY .vol file, of course, yours will be different.

Now you will be able to see your skin in the game. The best way to view it is in

Scarabrae, go into the flag room and set up cameras EVERYWHERE and the go to

the command station and look at yourself.

I hope that I helped those of you that were as frustrated with skinning as I was...
