KRIEGSPIELER! A wargamer's magazine for Aussies; at last!
I have been working here in the Sinai Desert, Egypt, as part of the Multinational Force and Observers now for well over 4 months. In that time I have gone through a period of "drying out" so to speak, where I haven't had much opportunity to indulge in my second favorite pastime of wargaming. My favorite I can't go into here just let me say that apart from a short holiday with my wife I haven't been able to indulge in it either. So I was very happy to receive TWO, (count them; two), copies of "Kriegspieler" in the mail from Australia.
I received issues number 5 and 6, July and October '99, and immediately dived into them.
In issue 5 an Article by Phillip Jones on the new "Elan" tactical rules for Napoleonic battles, was the first offering. (You can find a copy of this article elsewhere in "On... Parade!"). There is also a review on "Mr. Lincoln's War", a rule set covering the American Civil War, (as if you couldn't guess). For the Warhammer Ancient Battles player, or WAB for short, there is a Varangian Rus Army list for you to tinker with.
An article by Phillip Clark, "Campaigning the Thirty Years War - a Holistic Approach" satisfied my appetite for something DBR, as did Ian Turton's article on Wargaming the Battle of Lexington quench my thirst for some Horse and Musket action.
The articles in issue 6 included a delightful piece on the Hessians in service with the British during the American War of Independence (AWI), by Ian Turton. As I am in the process of building two AWI Armies, I found the article very useful. This article also touched on the "possibility" that Russian troops might have been dragged into the AWI. A very good article that was very informative and well penned. Ian would appear to be a regular contributor to "Kriegspieler!". As is Phil Clark; another article by him, Part 2 of "Campaigning the Thirty Years War - The Lion of the North" was very interesting. Again this article was well written and covered points that I was not aware of relating to this interesting period of conflict.
An article on "Issues in WRG 1685-1845" rules, dealing with clarifications and amendments rounded out the October issue
Both issues had product reviews, reader's comments and Club Contact details. A column, "The Diceman Speaks..." provided the "spice" and "controversy" required from any good Wargames Mag!
I have not covered all the articles from issues 5 and 6; I've just wanted to give you a taste of what's on offer in "Kriegspieler!" The abundance of listings of "Local" wargaming product suppliers alone makes "Kriegspieler!" a must buy for the Aussie, (and Kiwi?), wargamer
Final verdict: 9 out of 10. A very well presented and relevant wargames mag for the "Down Under" wargamer. At under $9.00 Aussie an issue it's a bargain! Subscribe today!!
