PROFILE:
Nina was born in Santa Cruz, CA to Daniel and Agatha Rizal, the second of what would
eventually be four daughters. Her father being a college professor at the University of
California - Santa Cruz, and her mother a guide at the Santa Cruz Mission.
The Rizal girls would each be entered into Miriam College, a private Catholic school and their mother's alma mater. There Nina would prove herself to be a model student - obedient, respectful, and quiet. She didn't associate much with other children, given to spending all her time at school alone. Observed her teacher: "Nina...seems to be apathetic when taken out of the classroom environment." Despite her lack of interest in socialization, Nina had an ideal childhood, graduating elementary school with top honors and several merit awards.
The onset of high school not only meant a change in Nina's environment, but also in her personality. Although she remained somewhat of a loner, she was by no means the model of normalcy. As a rebellion to her Catholic upbringing, Nina cultivated an interest in the occult. Because of this, she would meet and form a friendship with Elizabeth Baxter, an outcast and fellow practitioner. Together they practiced the occult arts, their "powers" both admired and feared by others for the four years of their friendship.
On July 8, 1987, on an overnight camping trip celebrating their class' graduation, the two girls deviated from the communal camp, headed off to set up their own. Two hours later, Nina was heard shouting, and a powerful explosion soon followed, effectively shaking the small canyon.
Nina was found unconscious, her head cut and bleeding. Elizabeth was no where to be seen. After half an hour of frantic search, she was discovered at the bottom of the canyon, apparently thrown up by the explosive force, her body landing on the sharp boulders below. They were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital. Nina regained consciousness five hours later, with no apparent memory of what had happened. She was diagnosed with a minor concussion, and was released later in the day. She headed directly to Elizabeth's bedside in the ICU ward, and refused to be removed from where she stood.
At 10:43 PM, Elizabeth Baxter entered cardiac arrest, and died.
Though Nina and Elizabeth were obviously injured by way of a powerful blast, there was no evidence of such an event ever found at the site. The case remains unsolved to the present day.
Nina entered UC Berkeley later that year, and proceeded to attack her work with a vengeance. She graduated in 1993 with a Ph.D. in Psychology and a M.S. in Sociology. Upon learning of the existence if the OPI, Nina applied immediately to the Department of Justice, and was soon accepted. She relocated to the East Coast, attending Quantico for the next two years. She requested a transfer to the DOJ-OPI almost immediately after graduation.
