Skaven is an all or nothing army. Most people say that they can
be summed up in their initial charge. If it fails, they are toast,
but if it succeeds then you are a goner. In my experience with them,
I don't know if I can really agree with that. Skaven have some
regiments which are good against almost anything, if they do what
they're supposed to that is. Skaven's main weakness is it's
extremely poor leadership. All the regiments have a basic Ld of 5
which is added to their rank bonus. This makes Skaven easy as hell
to break, and psychology against them always works. Advantages that
Skaven have are not too numerous, but fairly powerful. They have
some killer magic. A Grey Seer with the right spells can kill about
anything. Their war machines are pretty good as well, at least the
Screaming Bell and Doomwheel. Plus, they will almost always
outnumber you. Their greatest asset is their numbers. They move in
huge 4 or 5 ranked units across the field with relatively fast
movement, usually 5 or 6 inches or double that when the march.
Having strength in numbers, mean that individual Skaven suck. This
even applies for the characters. The general at 90 points, is as
weak as a goblin general. Skaven, however, have some really awesome
magical equipment. If you let him, a general with a Fellblade can
take out anything, I've seen it done. With no cavalry and no missile
weapons, Skaven just run towards the enemy and hope for the best. If
they don't do well when they charge, Skaven can be killed pretty
easily. If not, their huge ranks will just absorb their casualties.
Skaven also hae some potent special characters, with my favorite one,
Deathmaster Snikch.
If you like huge blocks of troops to control then Skaven is the
tops here. They have good magic and some units that can do damage to
anything. The individual models are weaklings, but can be a good
fighting force together. Plus, Skaven have assassin regiments which
is always fun .
