San's (New and Improved)

Page

Sanford and Son debuted as
a mid-season replacement series in January, 1972, and was an instant success with
television viewers. Comedian Redd Foxx plays the show's central character, Fred Sanford, a
65-year-old Los Angeles area junk dealer. Sanford's son, Lamont, is grudgingly his partner
in the junk business, but is always looking for a way out. Many of the episodes focus on
the conflict between widowed Fred and Lamont and their differing opinions on how to run
both the business and their lives. Fred makes his son crazy with his get-rich-quick
schemes, but Lamont ultimately cares for his pop too much to leave him to his own devices.
A cast of colorful characters add to the hilarity of the series, including Fred's buddies
Melvin (Slappy White), Bubba (Don Bexley) and Grady (Whitman Mayo), as well as his
meddling Aunt Esther (LaWanda Page.) Another "star" of the show was the theme
song, written by Quincy Jones.
Sanford and Son
starring
Fred Sanford
65 year-old Fred Sanford is nobody's fool. He's the owner of a junk yard, which he runs
with his son Lamont. An opinionated old buzzard, Fred is full of get-rich-quick schemes
and often meddles in the affairs of his son, Lamont. He's brash and pushy, and funny as
all get up. One of his favorite manipulative maneuvers is to fake a heart attack whenever
things aren't going his way, calling out to his dead wife "I'm coming to join you,
Elizabeth" whenever he feels it will help his cause.
Lamont Sanford
34-year-old Lamont is an unwitting partner in his father's junk business in Central Los
Angeles. He would rather seek his fortune elsewhere, but cares too much for his aging
father to leave him on his own. Lamont is the voice of sanity in the Sanford household,
and puts up with much of his father's loving, but abusive tactics. Not many people could
endure all those years of being called a dummy. However, Lamont isn't fooled by his
father's gruff exterior, and remains frustradedly loyal to Fred and his pursuits.
Aunt Esther
If Fred Sanford has a conscience, its name is Esther, a bible-thumping sister-in-law who
always is at war with him. Esther has her own ideas about how Fred should be running his
life, and he certainly knows where he'd like to see her go. Some of "Sanford &
Son's" most hilarious moments come from the interplay between opinionated Fred and
his strong-willed sister-in-law.
Grady Wilson
Grady Wilson is one of Fred Sanford's best friends. A little old and a little slow, he is
a good and patient friend. Grady moves out of Fred's Central L.A. neighborhood for a time
to live with his daughter in fashionable Westwood, but eventually comes home to his
friends and takes up residence in the Sanford Arms.
Julio Fuentes
Julio is Fred's Hispanic neighbor, as well as Lamont's good friend. Being a bit of a
bigot, Fred is relentlessly suspicious of Julio, even though Julio is a fine person. A
smart man with a sense of humor, Julio always takes his crotchety neighbor with a grain of
salt, and enjoys watching Fred get tangled in the webs of Fred's own weaving.
