Square's recent RPG release of Xenogears came
out on the shelves this past November, and I think it made a great hit with hardcore RPGers.
The game's story itself is a riveting plot that keeps you glued to the controller and it's animation sequenced FMV's only enhance the story-line. Xenogears' music is stunning, and the C.D. quality is fabulous. I recently bought the soundtrack to this game, and I love it!! ^_^ My fave songs are "Small of Two Pieces", the game's ending song, and "Bonds of Sea and Fire", the theme at the beginning with the information about the war between Aveh and Kislev.
All the characters in this game are well-developed. You really begin to feel sorry for all the bad things that happen to poor Fei when you get into the game!! When each character talks, a small anime image is portrayed at the side of the screen. I like this, because it's difficult to figure out what the person looks like that you're talking to. (This only appears for the main characters, and some of the side chara's.) I accidently mistook one of the chara's as a girl when they were a guy, once, until I saw their picture! ^_^ The figures are done with sprites, not polygons (FF7 was done with polygons). They sort of resemble the ppl from Final Fantasy Tactics. (I just LOOOVE little chibi figured sprites! Their just so darn cute!! ^^)
The graphics themselves are pretty good. Sometimes the scenery was a little choppy, but I think that was because everything was mainly done with Sprites. Other than that, the church, Citan's home, and Bart's ship are just a few of some of the cool scenery.
When I tried out the demo of Xenogears that came with Parasite Eve, I was a little disappointed in how easy it seemed. The battles were simple, and didn't last very long. When I played the real game, It still seemed sort of easy, until I got to my first difficult boss in the game, Ramsus. (I won't go blabbing on here, cause I'll probably end up making this whole review a Spoiler) I let him kick my butt a few times before I turned for aid from my friend's gameshark. ^^ (Yes, I know, mes a cheater.) I'm not saying the bosses in this game are unbeatable (God forbid, I would have chucked my PSX across the room by now) But they are sure a challenge. You have to use tactics with your fighting, and learn how to use your combos.
All out, this game is magneficent, and any RPG fan should own it!! ^_^
