What's the New Mary Jane?
by: McKinley Morganfield

"Why would I want to eat your cooking? I'd rather eat dirt!"

"You don't mean that, you jerk!"

"Yeah I do!"

"No you don't!"

I can get so tired of my sister and Ranma fighting. Their daddies got
them engaged a while ago, you see, but all they seem to do is fight.

"Oh, what do you know, you stupid tomboy?" yelled Ranma. Akane
responded by throwing a frying pan at Ranma. He dodged, and the pan
hit my abacus, forcing me to re-start my computations. That was the
final straw.

"Ranma's right, Akane, your food isn't very good."

"Don't take sides with this JERK, Nabiki!"

"I'm not. I'm just stating the truth. But you know..." Akane
stopped going after Ranma, and turned to face me. I waited a few more
seconds for Ranma to join her.

"Have you ever noticed that Ranma always at least tries your food, no
matter how bad it is? That's more than you can say for me or the rest
of the family." Akane thought about that for a few seconds.

"Yeah, that's because...because it's good for him." Akane blushed at
the triteness of her response.

"And Ranma...have you ever wondered why Akane is so intent on
improving her cooking? You think she does it for the insults?
Because she wants a job as a chef?"

"She probably does it just to torture us." I rolled my eyes and gave
a few seconds for Ranma and Akane to argue.

"So..." I said in a loud voice. Ranma and Akane again turned their
attention to me.

"So Akane, why are you so intent on improving your cooking?"

"Because...because I want people to be able to appreciate it, and have
good food to eat."

"Which people?"

"Well...you know. The family."

"Kasumi's a good cook, isn't she?"

"Kasumi's not always going to be here. Somebody needs to cook when
she gets married."

"You're the one who's engaged. Kasumi can't even recognize that Dr.
Tofu is crazy about her. Doesn't it seem logical that you'll be
married before Kasumi?"

"Well I sup...not to this pervert, I won't!"

"Hey, who you calling a pervert?"

"And Ranma..." I asked, ignoring their argument.

"Yeah?"

"Why do you always try her food?"

"Because she'd hit me if I didn't!"

"I think there's another explanation."

"Yeah? Like what!"

"That you like Akane."

"Don't be ridiculous! How could I like her? I mean, not only can't
she cook, but she's so uncute..."

"If you don't like her, then why don't you chase after Ukyou or
Shampoo? They're master chefs, and I know you find them cute."

"Because...I told you, if I do anything wrong she hits me!"

"Yeah, she hits you a lot. Why is that, Ranma? You're a master
martial artist. If you can dodge attacks from karate masters you
should gave no problem dodging Akane's strikes."

"Because...uhhh..."

"Because you like her, and that influences your reactions."

"That's not true!"

"And you, Akane." Akane was momentarily startled. "Why do you always
get mad at Ranma when Shampoo or Ukyou are around?"

"Because he's always chasing after them!"

"Why do you care?"

"Because he's MY..." she stopped, blushing.

"So you like him too, and get jealous when he's around other women."

"I never said that!"

"Than why don't you say 'I don't love Ranma.'"

"Ha! No problem."

"Then do it." Akane paused for a few seconds. I smiled.

"Go ahead..."

"I don't want to! Why should I let you control what I do?"

"Why not? You let daddy control what you do."

"I can't help...yeah, he got us engaged. That doesn't mean he
controls me. If I was to marry this jerk, maybe..."

"That's not what I mean. In fact, I meant the opposite."

"Huh?"

"I have this theory. That if you hadn't been betrothed you'd be
married by now."

"That's crazy!"

"Is it? And the only reason you haven't is because you're both angry
at your daddies for betrothing you, and you want to prove to them
their decision was a mistake. So you're letting your desires to be
independent get in the way of your lives. The worst type of control,
because you won't even acknowledge it."

"No way! Nobody has control over our lives but us!"

"Then prove me wrong."

"How do you want us to do that?" asked an angry Akane.

"Admit you two love each other."

"That's stupid!" yelled Akane.

"Why should you care? Afraid of proving your parents right?"

"No, but I'm NOT going to tell Ranma I love him just to prove
something to you!"

"C'mon Akane, just once." Ranma. I suspected Ranma would come
around, given a little time to think.

"Ranma?" Akane couldn't believe he had said that.

"Just...if it's no big deal, it's something I'd like to...get out of
the way."

I was about to add on to that, but thought better of it.

"Do you mean that, Ranma?" She looked at him in the eyes. Ranma
stared back at her, completely silent. Then, to both Akane and my
complete surprise, he drew Akane close to himself and kissed her on
the forehead.

"I'm tired of pretending, Akane."

I felt like kicking myself...I had really blown it. Their first kiss,
and I didn't have it on tape...five thousand yen down the drain.
However, although I'm embarrassed to admit it, I couldn't help
but smile.
