Brigantia the River Maiden

Brigantia or Brigit is the daughter of The Daghdha. Like Lugh she is a Goddess of many things, she represents poetry and inspiration, midwifery and healing and is associated with the arts and crafts. She is most associated with rural life, fertility and rivers. Where as in urban areas her worshippers will mostly follow the aspects of the arts about her in rural areas she takes on a much greater role. She blesses the crops and rivers, ensures fertility in the women of the villages and livestock and ensures good health. She like Belenus and Lugh began as a sun goddess. According to legend, she was born at sunrise and a tower of flame beamed from her head.
As a goddess of fire and water, she is immortalised by many wells and springs. Most important of her monuments, though, was a shrine near Kothe in Irenayer where there is a perpetual flame burning for Brigit. It is tended by nineteen virgins called the Daughters of the Flame. They can not talk to men, nor can men come near the shrine.
