The Answer Page For Those Really Bent Questions.

Here they are. But, before you go further, did you work through the problems yourself, or is this a fit of desperation? I hope you did it yourself, and feel great about it!!!

  1. Well, let's consider this an easy little warm-up, shall we. What, you don't believe me? If you missed this, you will probably gag in dis-belief. Anyway, since the ship is afloat, the water level in relation to the ship stays the same. Therefore, eight feet are above water at the end, just as at the beginning.

  2. Simple algerbra is the key for this question. Let us try it with X representing animals and Y representing birds. One can express this with the simple equation:

    X+Y=30
    so... 4X+2Y=100
    therefore... (4x20)+(2x10)=100
So, there we have it, there are 10 birds and 20 animals. (Don't worry, these do get harder.)

  3. My sixth grade teacher tried this one on our whole class, and if I remember correctly he left us all stumped for days, and boy, did that answer sound simple when I heard it. I couldn't believe how simple the logic was.
The answer goes like this: He asks either man, "If I were to ask you if this is the way I should go, would you say yes?" If the man he asks is the one who tells the truth, he will of course get the right answer. If the man he asks is the man who always lies, that man lies about the answer he would give thus giving the right answer. By forcing the liar to lie twice you cancel out the first lie, then he is forced to tell the truth.

  4. There are different angles one can take on solving this one, but I opt for one simple method: Take a fruit from apples and oranges, say it's an orange, (or apple), you now know which box this is because they're all mis-labeled. If it's definitly not the apples and oranges box, and you have, say, an orange in your hand, then it's definitly the oranges box.
Now the easier part: Due to the fact that all of the boxes are mis-labeled, all you have to do is swap the other two labels around, and eureka, you've done it.

  5. Tricky! The messenger is a truth teller. If the native in the distance lived on the western side of the island, and was therefore a truth teller, he would say so. If on the other hand, the native in the distance lived on the eastern side of the island and was therefore a liar, he would say the same thing.

  6. The answer is simple no mater how many socks you have in your drawer. If there are only two colors of socks, no mater what, you always get one matching pair from a minimum number of three socks. (Hope you weren't sleeping.)

  7. Another algerbra equation, let's say M = men, W = women and C = children:
    We know that M+W+C = 120
    Also that M(5.0)+W(2.0)+C(0.1) = 120
And after scrupulous calculations we discover that:
    17(5.0)+13(2.0)+90(0.1) =
    85+26+9 = 120
Therefore we have 17 men, 13 women and 90 children at the circus.

  8. (A real tough one.) The answer is, (c). The answer works like this:
    1 gallon = 16 cups.
After the first exchange there is 16 cups of water and 1 cup of alcohol in the first bucket, (16/17 water and 1/17 alcohol).
15 cups of alcohol in the secondbucket, (15/15 alcohol).
After the second exchange there are 16 cups*(16/17 water, 1/17 alcohol) in the first bucket.
    15 cups of alcohol + 1 cup*(16/17 water; 1/17 alcohol).
So in the first bucket we have: 16 cups*(16/17) water or 256/17 cups of water.
And in the second bucket we have: 16 cups*(256/272) water or 256/17 cups of alcohol in the water.

  9. The first man, whether or not he is an islander, did say he is white. (Either he is white and therefore tells the truth, or he is an islander and lies; the result is the same in either case.) The second man accurately reports what the first man said, so we know the rest of his statement is also true. Therefore he is white and the first man is white. The third man is therefore a liar and a native.

  10. (d)

  12. White. It is a polar bear, For the North Pole is one of the places where you can go one mile south, one mile east, and one mile north, and still end up at your starting point. (The others are near the south pole.)

  13. Twenty-eight days. On the twenty-eighth day the snail reaches the top of the well. Once there, it does not, of course, slip backward.

  14. Three hours and three minutes. Once the amoeba in the first jar has reproduced itself (a process that takes three minutes) that jar is at the same point at which the second jar started. The only difference is that it is three minutes behind.

  15. Turn the first switch on for a few minutes and then shut it off. Turn the second switch on and then go to the other room. The light bulb that is warm is connected to the first switch, the light that is on is connected to the second switch and the light that is off and cool is connected to the third switch.

  16. 1?4 of an inch. (It travels only through the covers if the books are in order because the front and back covers will be touching.)

  17. Bottle - $1.05, Cork 5¢.
