Axis And Allies Eagerly awaited, big let down. AI is truly inept. Multiplayer is buggy. Game is buggy. SEI released a shareware version of A&A called Dogs of War. Milton Bradley threatend to sue unless they took it off the net and stopped selling and they did. Pity, because that game was far less buggy, had a more intelligent AI, didn't crash during multiplayer games, and was 40 times smaller. Sure, the graphics weren't as good, there were no animations... but you could play a game through and not have to reboot your computer every other time. Some basic problems with the game that CAN be fixed and hopefully will be- -the first turn moves should be programmed into the AI. So much of A&A depends on good first turn putrchases and moves and the AI makes TERRIBLE first turn moves. -when two of the same kind of unit from two different powers are in the same territory, it is impossible to distinguish between them. --example- typical first turn move for Russia is to put its transport in the North Sea with the British transport and the British battleship. Germany will almost always attack the next turn, and score at least one hit. The Allied player wants to lose the Russian transport but can't see which is which and so half the time loses the wrong transport. -takes forever to load and unload a lot of transports at once. Would be nice to have an "unload all" option -tanks don't blitzkrieg correctly, even after applying the patch -there is no undo. If your mouse slips or if you are trying to attack a small territory and miss, you are screwed. -should be an option to turn off animation. Slows down the game, is unnecessary, and gets annoying very quickly. That's all I can think of for now. In sum - really stupid AI, buggy, clunky, slow. Nice graphics though. Simple, clear, not flashy. Buy it if they ever fix the multiplayer because playing the AI is less challenging than picking your nose. You'll know that the multiplayer is fixed by stopping by http://www.zone.com/asp/script/default.asp?game=axis . If all they are talking about is patches, crashes and fixes... stay away. |
