Information about the FY sub!

Priya actually went out and took a look at it last weekend. ^^

All the info below by Rei-chan is correct, regarding the OP/ED and omake and stuff. As far as the subbing job goes...I actually think that the subber did a good job. ^^ I know we all love our Tomodachi subs, but the ones I have, at any rate, have some typos/grammatical weirdness ( The Four Gods' Sky and Sky? ^^ ). As far as I remember, the commercial subs were error-free.

The translation itself seems to be rather accurate...and although I prefer "Suzaku no Miko" and "Suzaku Shichiseishi", the "Priestess of Suzaku" and "Suzaku Seven" works too, I guess.

( One thing that I'd like to have seen in the sub of the first ep was the translation notes that Tomodachi gave...like "Upper" and "Elbow Stomp" and who "Aja" was. But oh well. ^^ )

  First of all, the preview of the next episode was left at the end of each, and the review of the previous episode was at the beginning of each (except the first one! ;). Translated, of course... Also, the opening and ending was at the beginning and end of each episode. The opening was translated into english (subtitles). Each opening was english, there was no romanji! Ah, but fear not.. if you watch to the very end of the tape (after the last episode's ending, then after all the credits after that!) you get an omake.. the opening with the romanji. Also, there was no subtitles on any of the endings, but during the credits afterwards the ending theme played, and there was subtitles for it. That's about it. Having not seen any fansubs, I can't compare the quality of the subbing to anything, but except for one or two small thinks I noticed, the subbing was really good quality.

  Well, that's heartening, isn't it? I got this information from the Pioneer FY page, so I'm sure of this. The subbed version will be called "Fushigi Yuugi - The Universe of the Four Gods" and the dub will be known as the "Mysterious Play." Why bother to translate the title for the dub? Well, firstly, the point of the dub is to be English-language, and secondly, this will keep people from accidentally buying the dub when they want the sub, and vice versa.
  
  The prices I quoted earlier sitll stand.
  
  On rec.arts.anime.misc, the translator (?) mentioned that he translated "Suzaku No Miko" as "Shrine Maiden of Suzaku" but Pioneer called it the "Priestess of Suzaku" after all on the box. Ooookay, He'd also mentioned that he used "Celestial Warriors" for "seishi" but he'd try and keep the word "seishi" in there somehow. I guess that's okay.
  
  Regarding the OP/ED thing...they decided to follow the example from fansubs and alternate translation/Romaji for the OP/ED. And..apparently...the credits between episodes are being left in! Wai!

  And now for the implications:
  
  Since both dubs and subs are coming out, this more or less nixes ANY AND ALL FANDUBS AND FANSUBS OF THE TV SERIES. Gomen, minna, but no more subs. And the fandubs...*sigh* I don't know much about law, but I guess those are illegal too. *shrug*
  
  However, they don't have rights to the OVA's yet. So those are still free.
  
  I don't know what to think of this; I guess they'll do a good job.

  And here's some more info! Yikes.
  
  They're releasing the series this fall, no date set, at one volume every other month. They're releasing it on both DVD and VHS, and will consider LD if people want it enough. ^_^ The first tape will have episodes 1-4, and the rest will have 3 episodes per tape for a grand total of 17 tapes. O_O ( Yikes! Splitting the volumes? But apparently this works out, cliffhangers-wise.) The Music Crips MAY follow.
  
  And now, for the cost. Get this: $24.98 per tape for the dub, and $29.98 per tape for the subs. YEOWCH. Oh well. And the OP is only played at the beginning of the first episode on the tape, not before each one, and the ED is only played at the end of the last episode on the tape.
  
  They're still contracting with voice actor agencies.
  
  Oh, the series will be "recommended for 13+", and probably unedited.
  
  There's no merchandising contract yet.
  
  I dunno, the only thing that bothers me is the price per tape. But BUY at least one, to support the commercial endeavour ( yeh, yeh, some people have whined to me about how expensive it is, blah blah yakkity smackity. If no one buys them, I think then they'll stop releasing them, but they'll STILL have the rights, so fansubs will still be illegal, and NO one can get them. Y'see? Buy at least one, if you can! )
  
  Rumor is that Pioneer only bought the rights to the first 26 episodes, due to scheduling whatevers. I don't know if this is true, so don't quote me.
