WEAPONS OF JEET KUNE DO: THE BACKFIST

The Backfist is a strike of medium power, but usually is thrown with the element to surprise. The backfist is most effective after your opponent blocks your straight punch. The backfist is also used quickly after a lop sao or other trapping techniques. The strike is quick and snappy giving a hard pop to your opponent.
--"Sifu" Bevan Bell
- The punch is thrown from your basic on-guard stance.
- The strike shoots out straight, pointing the back of your wrist toward your target (usually your opponents temple).
- At the point before impact, your wrist will whip forward, firmly poping on target.
- The arm will follow the exact path in which you threw it with just about the same amount of speed.
- You should think about the speed of the punch and then try to aquire more speed.
The Backfist can come from four different positions:
- High-- The high position usually strikes towards the nose or temple of the opponent. It can also be executed in a vertical position with the arm traveling upward and making an "L" shape
- Medium-- This is the backfist explained above. The backfist is a horizontal strike following almost a straight line.
- Low-- The low backfist usually strikes for the groin. It follows a vertical position with the fist and arm moving down.
- Reverse Backfist-- The reverse backfist is executed by spinning the body around like a spin kick, but catching the opponent off guard with a hand. This particular strike aims for the upper portions of the body.
