THE BACKBONE OF JEET KUNE DO: THE LEAD PUNCH

The lead punch is one of the most used and most proficiant tool in Jeet Kune Do. The punch was often refered to as the "backbone of Jeet Kune Do" During sparring or actual battles.. if other attacks or techniques weren't getting past the opponent's defense, even Bruce would fall back to the straight blast of the lead punch.
--"Sifu" Bevan Bell
The lead punch is unlike any other strike. It has unique delivery and power train.. and make no mistake -- the strike is quick, powerful, destructive and unique compared to any other art or technique.
- Stand in your basic Jeet Kune Do ready stance.
- Keep your forward fist loose and about shoulder high and your guarding hand by your chin.
- The strike should shoot out towards the target with a loose fist, clenching the fist shortly before impact.
- At the same point that the fist reaches the target the waist and shoulders should twist towards the target giving the extra snap *(keeping in mind that the true target is atleast 1-inch behind the initial target).
- At the final stage of executing the strike, your body weight should be slightly moved to the forward foot.. as if you had stepped into the punch.
- The strike can also be executed as a finger jab or bui jee
- **Remember: Practice Makes Perfect

*This extra snap and visualizing the true target gives the punch more power and a bit of a shock effect.
**The recommended exercise practice for the lead punch drill is to execute the punch on a hanging piece of paper. Helping you attain the crisp snap to the punch and visualize the true target.
THE ADVANTAGES OF THE LEAD PUNCH
- FASTER-- the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
- MORE ACCURATE-- "chooses straight course," thus, less chance of missing and is surer than other punches.
- BALANCE IS LESS DISTURBED-- safer.
- LESS INJURIOUS TO ONE'S HAND
- GREATER FREQUENCY OF HITS-- more damage can be done.
- Can foil the opponent's complicated attack when used as a stop hit.
- Reduces the chances of missing because opponent has less time for blocking.
- The effectiveness of the right lead depends on the speed and surprise with which it is delivered.
