Yahiko is a bold, young pickpocket who is rescued by Kenshin from the yakuza he is forced to work for because his parents died leaving debt to them. He wants to become strong so that he doesn't have to depend on anyone and so that he can defends his parents' honor. Yahiko learns Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu from Kaoru.
Yahiko can be a little arrogant sometimes and quarrels with Kaoru and Sanosuke all the time, but he's really a good kid at heart. He is serious about learning kenjutsu and often shows wisdom of one older than his age.
Lately he has especially shown more maturity in his serious fights after taking responsibility while Kenshin, Sanosuke, and the others are... away (Yes, your administrator is still trying to keep this spoiler free.) Yahiko shows lots of potential and will undoubtedly become a fine swordsman when he grows up.

"Dammit! I want to be strong! Strong so that I can defend my parents' honor by myself."
