Overnight Trip To Garibaldi

?#060;/td> I have known a lot of friends since I joined Youth Leadership Millennium 1999-2000, a leadership training program in S.U.C.C.E.S.S.(United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society). In this program, I often challenge myself to learn new skills, communicate with other people, be exposed to new experiences and make constructive use of all the knowledge I acquire.?However, challenge something is not an easy thing to do.?That’s why challenging myself is one of the major reasons that I joined this program.?Also, I hope that I can make use of my camera and appropriate equipment to give a presentation to my parents, friends and others about the expedition area.
I had a greater challenge from August 28 to 29, 1999 (Saturday and Sunday).?The purposes that I had chosen to make this journey were to challenge myself more and learn more useful things during this overnight trip.?Also, I hope that I can successfully get The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award by the end of this program (March 2000).

On that day, we, the Orion, participated in an overnight hiking trip in Garibaldi Provincial Park which was near Whistler and two hours away from Chinatown.?I was carrying my backpack all the time and the total weight of my backpack was 33lbs.?It was so heavy!

All of us arrived at our meeting place, McDonald Restaurant at Main and Terminal Street, on time at half past eight.?After we got into the bus at a quarter past nine, we arrived the parking lot of Garibaldi Provincial Park at about a quarter past eleven.?Before we started hiking, we all followed one of the group coordinators, See-ho Tseng, to do some exercises.?After that, half of us ran to the "mobile-washrooms".?Unfortunately, those two washrooms were so terrible that they were full of flies and bees.?At that moment, I would choose not to go if I can hold it.?However, I finally decided to go ahead.?I couldn’t believe that I was so brave!

I was in Group #1 and my group coordinator was Gabby Fung who was a man of vision and very "talkative".?My group members were Jennifer Tam, Louisa Lun, Gordon Tsoi, Richard Yeh and Barney Choi.?All of us were working on The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.?We were the second to last group to start hiking and we started at twelve o’clock.

During the hiking time, my group members walked as a single line. Thus, we could follow one another and would not get lost. On the one hand, my group coordinator was always be the last person of the line so she could see each of us very clearly. On the other hand, the slowest person always walked at the front so he/she wouldn't get behind on us.

First of all, we walked in a trail which was beside Rubble Creek. After a thirty-minute walk, we had a five-minute break. We then continued walking and had our twenty-minute lunch at one o'clock. Richard didn't feel quite well and we had a short break at a quarter to two.?At a quarter past two, we had another five-minute break. Richard then felt that he needed some rests so we had a fifteen-minute break at two-forty. We finally arrived our point one, Taylor Junction to our camping site, at three-forty. We were all exhausted and quickly sat on those comfortable benches. Over there, we saw Mr. Ken Tung, the Chairman of Youth Leadership Millennium Program and the Director of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., and he said that he had already sat there more than an hour.He also taught us how to relax our arms. We all felt so good about this.
At four o’clock, we continued our walk again. This time, we didn't have any breaks.?We finally arrived Taylor Camping Site at a quarter to five. We were the last group who arrived there. As soon as we got there, we quickly set up our tent. At six, we went to the "kitchen" and cook our dinner. We spent about forty-five minutes to cook our dinner. We ate macaroni, chicken noodle soup, and beans with pork and tomato sauce. ?After that, all of us went to the tents separately. Some people played card games and some people chatted with one another. ?For me and Jennifer Tam, we chose to sleep in our comfortable tent. Unfortunately, I was awake at eleven when one of my group members, Louisa Lun, finished her chatting with her friends in the other tent. Then I continued my sleep.
The next morning (August 29, Sunday) was a cold and rainy day.?I was awake by the raindrops at six o'clock. I was the only person in my group who got up so early.?After I packed my stuffs back into my backpack, my other group members woke up and we walked to the Taylor Creek which was just beside the "kitchen" to wash our faces.?At a quarter past seven, we started to cook our first meal of the day-breakfast.?This time we cook a bit faster than yesterday.?We only spent about half an hour to cook it.?We ate oat meal, sausage, chocolate milk and ham.?After that, we spent our rest of the time to pack up our stuffs.

Before we started hiking, I quickly put on my waterproof jacket and raingear.?At half past nine, we left our camping site and we were the first group to start.?We arrived Black Tusk Junction at ten-forty.?After a ten-minute break, we continued our journey.?The trail was so muddy and all of our boots were full of mud.?After we walked for thirty minutes, we were called to go back to Black Tusk Junction. We then found out that the trip to Black Tusk was cancelled because of the rainy weather.

After a very long walk, we finally had our lunch at Taylor Junction.?At that moment, the temperature had?dropped down to 4oc.?Some people were so cold and needed to use their own emergency blankets.?One of our orion, Gabriel Pun, was freezing and needed to stay in his sleeping bag to keep himself warm.?Luckily, I felt really warm.?I think the reason was because I had enough clothing and energy to keep myself warm.?For my group, we ate a loaf of bread.?Also, we ate oat meal without pouring any water.?That’s my first time to eat oat meal in this "strange" way.

Thirty minutes later, we continued our walk.?We were all exhausted.?This time we didn’t take any breaks at all.?Although Richard Yeh didn’t feel well, all of my group members including me, encouraged him not to have any breaks and keep walking.?Barney Choi told Richard that he needed to go to washroom and encouraged him to hurry up.?I think Barney had done a successful job because encouraging people was not an easy thing to do.?I could feel that Barney’s words were a great encouragement to Richard.

Finally, we arrived the terminal line at half past four.?We were, again, the last group who arrived there.?As we arrived there, the other groups started clapping and shouting "Way to go!" to us.?Also, Mr. Ken Tung congratulated us.?We were all so cheerful.?At that moment, I could not believe that I could complete this durable journey.?However, I did it!?We took the bus at half past five.?Two hours later, we arrived McDonald Restaurant at Main and Terminal Street.?We were then dismissed.
In general, I really enjoyed this trip.?I learned many useful things.?I think the most useful thing that I have learned was to give it a try (to challenge it) whenever you have planned to do something and you did not know whether you can make it (reach the goal) or not.?Thus, I think that we could complete something or reach our goals if we were full of confidence.?Anyway, if you ask me to use two words to describe this trip, I would choose challenging and tough.?Once again, this trip was really tough!
