Why are the Chinese years named after animals?
According to the legend, Buddha summoned all the animals to say
goodbye to him before he left the Earth. However, only twelve animals
showed up to tell him farewell! The first to arrive was the Rat.
Secondly, the Ox showed up; thirdly the Tiger. After them, the Rabbit
and the Dragon; and the Snake and the Horse came. Then came the Goat,
the Monkey, the Rooster, and the Dog. Finally, the Pig arrived last
of all. To reward them for their loyalty, the Buddha named a year
after each one, in the order of their arrival.
The Chinese believe that the animal ruling the year of your birth
exercises a profound influence on your life.
