How she started her drawing-career
In 1982, Hiwatari started her career when she was nineteen years old,
by sending in a manga story to the well-known shoujo manga
(girlīs comics) anthology, Hana to Yume.
The story was named Mahou Tsukai wa Shitteiru,
which means "To know a Magician" or "I know a Magician". I donīt
think this was released as a tankoubon (compiled volume).
By doing this, she got recognized as a manga artist,
and she kept on drawing after that, waiting for another big break, which
she made with Boku-Chikyuu.
Hiwatariīs ideas for....
Boku no Chikyuu o Mamotte:
Hiwatari was very interested in making a lovestory, but she didnīt really know how to start. All of a sudden, she remembered some peculiar events that she experienced once when she was younger.
Once, when she was little, she dreamt a special dream. In that dream, all the plants and trees in her neighborhood spoke and sang to her. With this in mind, she created her female maincharacter, Alice, who has the special ability to speak to animals and plants.
The male maincharacter, Rin, was created out of a very
peculiar event. Once, when Hiwatari were in her highschool years, she moved
to a new house. She was standing in her room, looking out of her window.
It had snowed recently, and she watched the white layer that covered the
whole neighbourhood.
All of a sudden, she saw something very strange.
She was watching her neighborīs garden, when she suddenly noticed
that on the roof of the neighbourīs house, there was a childsī
footprints. She got very surprised, because no matter how hard she looked,
she couldnīt see how those prints had gotten up there in the first
place. But, she got even more surprised, almost scared, when she noticed
that the footprints suddenly ended.... With this in mind she created
Rin, a little boy with an evil twist.
The reason for the choice of the setting of the story was just a whim that Hiwatari chose Japan for the job. She once stood on her veranda, watching the sky, and smelt the scent of magnolia from her neighbours garden. Then she suddenly decided that the setting had to be Japan.
Now when Hiwatari had a setting, ideas for some of the maincharacters,
and so on, she started to think how she could make the story interesting.
"I want you to feel nostalgic and feel a sense of wonderment
at the same time", as she once put it.
She knew that she was about to make a romance, but....
the characters she had started to make was a very odd couple. She had decided
from the start that she had to have a quiet and shy highschool girl
and even more important, she had to, no matter what, have a kid
that would be an extreme nuisance, a brat. She didnīt want to give
that idea up, it was very appealing to her, so she decided that she wanted
to tell why the highschool girl and the "brat" were so far apart in age,
nine years as a matter of fact.
What Hiwatari didnīt expect was that her story turned out to be
much more complexed than she first imagined. As the story went on, she
came up with new ideas, as an example; she didnīt plan to make Alice,
Rin, and the others reincarnated from the start. That idea came
after she started to draw the series.
Hiwatari always had a special feeling for reincarnation,
she thought that it was very romantic, so she dicided that all her maincharacters
were reincarnated from a life as aliens, a life they all shared together.
Thatīs all I have right now. Iīll update this page as often
as I can!!
