Chapter 1 - Soulsower

It was a rainy night in Tokyo. Most sensible people would have been home sitting by the
window, watching the news, or reading the paper. However, Lita, Mina and I are not like most
people. The three of us were out splashing around, getting soaked and having a ball. While
running about creating total chaos around the city, we accidentally ran into someone we didn't
expect to see. It was Samantha: the new girl at school.

"Nice night, right Samantha?" asked Mina trying to be friendly.

"Yeah, whatever. And it's just Sam." she replied, a little depressed. Her short hair clung
around her face as she continued on trying not to attract any more attention. Unfortunately she
was not so lucky.

"Wanna come with us for a soda or something? It's Adrian's treat." offered Lita, much to my
surprise.

"No thanks. I've got more important things to do with my time." And with that the new girl
hurried off into the darkness of the stormy night.

"That was odd." I watched the figure retreat down the road. "Who did you say she was,
Mina?"

"She's the new girl in our class. It's weird because she doesn't seem to have any friends, and
when we try to do something for her she retreats even more. I've never seen anything like it."

"Well, it's her problem then. If she wants friends, they'll be around. `Til then, don't let it
bother you." I said wiping rain from my brow.

"Typical guy to say something like that." scoffed Lita as she rolled her deep green eyes. Then
she looked at me devilishly, "Now about those sodas...."

"Gotcha!" I winked at her as I lead them to a sweet shoppe just around the corner.

As we sat in the booth, sucking our sodas down, I couldn't help thinking of my friendship with
Mina and my attraction to Lita. Mina and I had grown up together before she left for France, and we
were now reliving old times and making new memories to replace the lost ones. Mina had also
introduced me to four of her friends: Lita, Serena, Amy, and Raye. I found out later that those four
girls, as well as Mina herself, were the famed Sailor Scouts I had read about. This was really cool.
After all, I was a Sailor Scout too.
Lita and I really took to each other. I had remembered being introduced to her by Mina
during high school, and immediately developed a fondness for the tall brunette. She was really
the only Scout I could relate to. I'm not as smart as Amy; I'm not as ditzy as Serena; and I'm not
as gung-ho about spiritual things as Raye. But Lita and I always shared the same style of life:
just go for it and go for it head on.

These two would be a couple of girls I wouldn't easily forget. I saw Lita looking at me as
cautiously as I was looking at her. Both of us tried to avoid eye contact.

After we finished, I decided to take the girls back to my place so I could collect my car and
drive them home. Mina mentioned that she had to get home first so she could feed Artemis, her
guardian cat. I think it was just a ploy to get Lita and I alone together. I figured I'd play along
with Mina's game and see where it led me.

After we pulled away from Mina's house, Lita pulled out her favourite tape from her bookbag
and asked if she could play it on my car stereo. I agreed and she put the tape into the slot. A few
seconds later "Sour Suite" by the Guess Who filled the air.

"Y'know, leave it to Mina to try and play matchmaker with us." I blurted out and then quickly
wished I hadn't. Lita was silent, looking out of the window, admiring how the lightening flashed.
The Goddess of storms looked so pretty sitting there. Mina was right; she is beautiful.

"So you're into the Guess Who, right?" I asked trying desperately to break the ice that seemed
to have been forming between us.

"Yeah," she sighed. "This song is one of my favourites. I love Burton Cummings' voice."

"Me too. I loved `Clap for the Wolfman' and `Running Back to Saskatoon.'" The
conversation was going well, but both the song and the carride was very quickly over. Lita
leaned over, hugged me and then went inside her apartment building. When she reached the
door, she turned and winked. I was in Heaven!

                              * * *

At school the next day, Sam was sitting in a secluded corner of the schoolyard alone. We all
stood nearby and watched her. Serena was the first to speak up.

"Well, I'm going over there and at least talk to her to find out why she's so lonely."

"I think you should stay out of this, meatballhead. It's none of your business. Afterall, you
may trip into her and then she'll have a reason not to be friendly." Raye spat as she folded her
arms across her chest. She looked down her nose at Serena while her long dark hair wavered in
the wind.

"Look Pyro. . ." Serena started and began one of her and Raye's famous tongue battles as the
rest of us just sighed. Abruptly Serena ended the battle to strut over to where Sam was sitting.
"Hi there, Sam. Mind if I sit here?"

"If you must." replied Sam passively almost unaware of Serena's presence.

"Okay." Serena completely ignored the girl's cool tone. "So tell me, why do you like to sit by
yourself all the time? Wouldn't you like some company?"

Sam's thin face turned slowly to face the blond. Her eyes were no longer glazed and her gaze
was almost hostile. "Look Serena, I'll level with you. I sit alone because I choose to. I have no
need for friends. So why don't you go back to your little group over there and leave me be."

Her voice was even and cold. Serena paled a little as the new girl spoke. The others had
overheard the conversation and noticed Serena's dulled complexion.

"Serena doesn't deserve that!" objected Lita always ready to defend her friends.

"Yeah, let's go tell her off!" Raye added vehemently.

Mina interjected. She was the bonding force of the group and knew how to handle everyone.
"No. It's none of our business. Serena started this on her own, so let her finish it on her own.
Have a little faith, you guys."

"She's right. Serena's a big girl. She'll be just fine." I agreed with Mina. Well, that earned
me the strangest look from Raye I've ever had - including the one where she was possessed by the
Puppet Master.

"Okay." Serena finished and with her hands up surrendering erected herself. "But as for you
not having a friend, you're too late for that. I'm your friend."

She walked off without giving Sam a chance to answer. Sam's face remained emotionless as
Serena returned to the others. Yet her green eyes followed the perky blond all the way.

"Good for you, Serena." congratulated Mina as Lita and Raye gave her critical looks.

"Everybody needs a friend, even if it's a forced one." reasoned Serena. She was glad that the
looks from Raye and Lita were softening in agreement. Serena didn't like to fight with anyone.

"Fine, but if she ever talks like that to me. . ." growled Lita. The rest of us just stared at her
and groaned.

`This is going to be a fun "friendship" project,' I thought sarcastically.
